how many of you atttended lalgudi sir's felicitation function held yesterday (march 9th) at music acaddemy?? it was just wonderful... starting from how he started his career to till now...

to add more an outstanding multimedia presentation melted everyone's hearts.. the felicitation speeches by tns sir, chandrasekhar sir, rks mama, smt.chitra visweswaram, sri b.m.sundaram, guru karaikudi mani were even more beautiful... especially tns sir recollected his live experience of watching lalgudi sir in the simhanandha pallavi demonstration by sri.mudikondan

but the speech by sri.gopalakrishna gandhi(grandson of mahatma gandhi and the governor of west bengal and yesterday's chief guest) made everyone woner.... the wonderful tamil whih he spoke and the musical anectodes that he mentioned swept everyone off their feet.... especially one thing which i would like to mention here... he told that he would apologise for not even having a "kadugu alavu" (mustard size) knowledge about carnatic music... but he went on to add that during the process of cooking rasam after adding all the ingredients, they would add kadugu (mustard) at the end even if it has no taste, no smell, no health benefits etc etc... and he said that he would like to occupy the role of a kadugu....

but unfortunately i had to leave after his address.... can anyone tell what happened after that???

Would love to hear more about the function, especially what anecdotes the other artistes related about Lalgudi mama.

Gopalakrishna Gandhi is also the grandson of Rajaji so it no wonder that he speaks Tamil eloquently!

GK Gandhi's speech was the best that I have heard in Chennai music circles and unlikely to be bettered anytime soon. Humour, poetry, wisdom, eloquence, melody and harmony of thought - it had everything in it. His measured approach and pauses made one try to guess what the next thought is. And when it was expressed, one felt a strange mix of delight and dismay. Delight at GK Gandhi's words, dismay that there are still miles to go for me in appreciating high intellect. That he got a standing ovation is enough incentive for everyone to get a copy of the speech, if and when it is made available.

Yes i was one of the luckiest who could attend the Felicitation Function for sri.lalgudi jayaraman sir.as someone mentioned we should be really proud to be able to be present during such great person's lifetime.Though the felicitation speeches by other musicians were good the speech by sri gandhi wasTHE BEST.he made the audience enjoy every single line of his speech.his mention of RANGAPURAVIHARA by MSS,BAROKRISHNAYYA by MLV and SOUNDARARAJAM by DKP showed his knowledge in music though he said he had only kadugalavu knowledge in music. He said musicians in those days didnt fuss about anything and could perform even in small places. He pointed out how present day concerts are affected by technical fuss like sound systems cell phones ringing etc. Sri.Gandhi mentioned one incident he remembered.once when MS amma left for a concert with accompaniments violin, mrudangam, ghatam, kanjira and morsing from kalki gardens,Rajaji told Sri.Sadasivam are you taking audience also with you. in those days this was unusual.today he said there is such a crowd on the stage itself.he advised young musicians not to consider music as a means of livlihood and riches.. Anyhow many people had to leave by the time his speech was over and coudnot listen to what lalgudi sir spoke in reply to all the felicitations.

It was an outstanding function for a truly deserving legend and was very touching. And yes, the Governor's speech was excellent. One of the best ever I have heard....

It really sounds excellent, although of course I would have understood little of it. Which is nobody's fault but my own.

I enjoyed the article in The Hindu and some words from lalgudi sir will stick in my mind.

To the effect that many instruments have various gods to support them; the violin has to stand on its own glory alone :)

After a long time, I am thinking of my response, as a person not very fond of Western Classical violin solo, to hearing carnatic violin: Ahh! That is how violin is supposed to sound!.

one anectode i remember is (i am not sure who said this yesterday on stage...is it mr.gandhi???) that when lalgudi sir was about to leave for edinburgh music festival, rajaji remarked thus "mudhal dhadava kalappadam illadha sarakku velinattuku pordhu" (for the first time unadulterated good is going abroad)....is the english translation good enough?? because i felt one can enjoy this in tamil much more....

there were lots.... tns sir mentioned about how he had a childish wish in his boyhood that if he grows up and sings well ,,will lalgudi sir play for him.... then he said how satisfied he was when that happened in his life.....chandrasekhar sir spoke about mama's 3 hr solo concert at carnatic college chennai which had dwaram and papa in the audience... chandrasekhar sir said that sri.papa wondered how lalgudi sir managed to keep every member of the audience glued to their seats for 3 hours and that too in a solo concert....

@Nick,
He switched to English after some time. And so, you would have understood a good amount of his speech anyway :)

Semmu86...Even I am looking for that Mand Thillana. More than that, the Kalyana vasantham song (not nadaloludai) at the beginning and adaadhu asangadhu vaa kanna as well.

The song is kannu thagini in Kalyana vasantham.. that podigai concert should be in sangeethapriya.. It was there some time back. I was told that video recording was done but will not be available for viewing as of now... "Lalgudi" library is in its nascent stages, one which contains his solo/accompanying concerts may be it will find a way there... i have no more details of this venture... will let you know as and wen i find them.. It would be great if this plan really kicks of... I would do anything to be a member there... Thanks for the photos..

Being in Kolkata, I have had the pleasure of listening to Shri Gandhi's speeches in English on a few occasions. It has always been a delight. Here is a collection of his speeches: http://rajbhavankolkata.gov.in/html/speeches.htm

Also, he is unfailingly present at TMK's, Sanjay's and Vijay Siva's concerts here. He enters the hall exactly at the appointed time with little ado and often stays through the concert. In the recent January festival, TMK gave an inspired performance, enthused by the very appreciative governor.

Not to digress here, but Suresh, thanks for the link - this one speech http://rajbhavankolkata.gov.in/html/speech109.htm won me over. I like the way he mentions his grandfathers to illustrate the point that the way to a government's 'heart' is through the engagement of the government's 'mind' - just the cold facts ma'am! Although, I must say that as far as I can see (cold facts again, sir) the two organs most governments seem to lack are a heart and a mind!

Quite a few Governors, it seems, are into CM....one of them, however, may not remain one for long, being drafted into co-ordainting upcoming assembly elections in Karnataka!

How true! A topic with immense debating possibilities.

Good that the Hindu has published excerpts from the speech. But certain interesting parts have been left out.

MS Anantharaman sir did come and greet LGJ after the speeches and gave an impromptu speech himself.
