A lively concert by Trichur brothers. They have great voices, with good command over it, and superb synchronisation. And I liked the selection of kritis a lot – good mix of popular and not-so-often-heard compositions, in different talas, and by various composers. However, all this variety was marred by the fact that all of them, from Maate to Akshayalinga, were sung in the same medium-fast tempo. Everything, including the aalapanas, seemed sort of hurried. There was no ‘nemmadi’ in the kutcheri, and it didn’t really touch the heart…

Discounting my personal preference for slower pace, it was a good concert. They started well with the daru, exhibiting a good grip over the laya [this was evident throughout the kutcheri – I guess it’s an advantage of having a Mridangist as father]. A fine, detailed bhoopaalam, followed by a kriti which I like very much. The swarakshara in the pallavi is so pretty!! [Incidentally, I heard the same kriti from TMK during the season. He sang it at a speed nearly half of today’s…]. Shankarabharana aalapana was elaborate [>17 min]. Neraval at Badarivana, and the swaras were very well rendered. Tukkada section was quite long, and included a number of request-songs.

Violin was good, but not quite upto the standards I’ve heard from him at other times. His Shankarabharana, though short [<7min], brought out the majesty of the raga better. Mridangam was uncomfortably loud throughout. Ghatam was good, but it felt quite loud too, during the tani.

Hi ,

I entered the concert when Raamabhakti was being rendered. Sankarabarnam and bhoopalam are the best in the concert. I personally liked the concerts as I discounted that I missed the slow tempo songs in the begining.

Do they belong to SSI school. The neraval and swara looked similar to TMK delivery?

I personally felt sriram kumar(sitting in the left close to mridangist) should have taken the entire sankarabaranam alapana and Krishnakumar the Bhoopala alapana. May be this gives full freedom on manodharma than doing their usual style of 'short' alternating on alapana phrasing. But I didnot mean lack of manodhram but may be it does not limit. But alternate alapana is difficult to deliver and may give a good appeal. I think most "brothers" do that, may be 'long' alternating during alapana.

Once again I wanted to say I liked the sankarabaranam package. Alapana was excellent. I heard this song very rarely in concerts. It was sung with great ease and enthu. The violinists main alapana was short but he touched the important pharases of sankarabaranam and I feel that always gives a good feeling. The brothers were in high sync and coordination.

For brother kind of combination, they can also include a "swarajathi amba kamakshi " . And I feel this gives a weight for the concert, may be at the third song. This is just an idea.

I wonder why cannot they sing alone too, they seem to be good individually.

The one sitting left close to the Mridangist is Srikrishna Mohan and the other one is Raamkumar Mohan. One can classify them as SSI school because they are currently under the tutelage of PSN.

Thanks
