Bharat Sangeet Utsav 2008 - Vijay Siva - Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan

Vocalist : Vijay Siva (the great)
Violinst : Lalgudi Viajyalakshmi
Mrithangam : Trichy Sankaran
Ghatam : Giridhar Udupa

This concert is another 2 hour concert at 3PM. When I entered the hall slightly early , it was (misra yaman) song of GNB , radhae sametha krishna by Manasai prasad followed by the famous 'kuri onrum illai'. That was a jugal bandhi concert by Mansai and Smitha Bellur. I realised that though MSS has not left a disiple, her songs (meaning her popular songs) are sung exactly the same way . And people strive hard to render exactly the same way as she did. A different kind of legacy.

The stage is full of who's who of CM. Udupa (prodigy) was not in the broucher. But along with TRichy Sankaran, the thani was good.
They actually stayed back for RKsrikantan who was following VijaySiva.

Vijay Siva's concert was such a hit with me that I cannot forget his kamboji rendition (thyagaraja' s Sri raghuvara) and the dhanyasi piece 'meenalochani brova'. He Started with Rama nannu brovara piece , upon just hearing his voice and the mood, I relaised that it is going to be a good concert. I donot have words to say how good I felt with the concert, a peaceful concert. And a very good concert planning for a 2 hour concert. But usual hamir kalyani, valaji of his school were missing. Offcourse the crowd also was missing. May be people were preparing to go towards jayanagar for TMK for spring festival concert.

Here is the list.

1. Rama nannu brovara - Hari Kamboji - (NS)
N @ Nepula kai

2. Siva Siva yena radha - Pantuvarali (RS)

3. Meenalochani brova - dhanyasi - (RN)
N @ kamabalini bhavani

4. dannu daivatha dasarathe (spelling) - ???

5. Sri Raghuvara aprameya mamava - kamboji (RST)
I have not heard this so far.

6. Mamava patabhirama - Manirangu followed by his usual slogam Kalyano seema

7. Vittala salaho swamy- Kapi (!) followd by slokam Maha yoga peta

8. Iyil Isayil usithavan vanji - Thriupugal

All the alapanas and swarams (except main) are scaled down as it is a 2 hour concert.

kuri onrum illai - (I have) no aim (in life)

Was this mis-spelled on purpose? :P

shankar,

What a joke ? I enjoyed it . It was 'unintentional'. Sorry to MSS, Rajaji and the two artists.

It is 'Iyal isayil nuchitha vanji'. Any idea What is the meaning of nuchitha ?
Huseni.. I couldnot identify the raga as I have heard very less of huseni.
Must be huseni if he has sung that earlier in that raga.

With so many threads on Bharat Sangeet Utsav, I had to pick one to express my appreciation for Ramanathan and Shashikiran for doing a wonderful job organising such events in other cities. PurandaraBhavan was low key compared to the crowds and festive atmosphere at Narada Gana Sabha. But, the audi was very nice and the music top class. I heard they are conducting a similar event at Delhi later this month.

Hey sriram, thanks a lot for your kind words of appreciation and more thanks, simply for turning up and spending a good part of a valuable weekend with us! Committed rasikas like you and 'sr_iyer' (who was there too) are an inspiration for us to do these kind of events. I'm also thankful to 'rajaglan' for attending and reporting about several of the concerts.

Ramanathan & (shasikiran) sir,

You are welcome. Thanks for organising the weekend treat. How can we miss artists like Sikkil and Vijay siva on a back to back concert on a weekend that too in Blore?

My loss. The far flung venues and the traffic considerations prevented me from attending such a rich musical fare...

I'd have to second that request. Mumbai is another sprawling city blossoming with South Indian culture.

Vijay- With your roots spanning both Delhi and Chennai, I wouldn't be surprised if you aren't treated to a royal welcome there.

I saw a part of this concert on Chandana TV today. It was telecast for half-an-hour, and included the first three pieces. Dhanyasi was superb!! They might be broadcasting all the concerts partially, since my friend said she watched the Manasi-Smita concert yesterday. People who missed the concerts can watch. It's at 8.00PM..
