This is my first live concert of Sri NSG. He presented the kritis in a traditional way. But it was his AlApana, neraval and swaraprastharam that I was drenched in. His alapanas were measured though- and especially when he was trailing off the varALi alapana to an end, I felt like saying that’s not enough, please don’t stop….. However it was compensated by an excellent varAli solo by the violinist and NSG was in full praise of this artist. He also excelled in replies to the kalpanaswarams throughout the concert.
The highlight of the concert was the kIravANi main with super good alapana, neraval, swaraprasthara and tani. Special mention to the violinist here again- he excelled!
The mridangam and ghatam players seemed to enjoy playing and so did NSG who was constantly praising them. NSG was supported by his student who was given chance to sing too. This performance was actually an inaugural concert for the opening of the dance and music school ‘Abhinayâ€

There is a commercial recording of this thillana by the late KV Narayanaswamy accompanied by Shri Palghat Raghu on the mridangam and VV Subramaniam (I think) on the violin. This was recorded at the Edinborough festival. In the concert and the recording Ustad Allah Rakha is also featured on some tracks. The mridangam thopi is to die for, Something out of this world

Suji,
I was traveling when you wrote this review and did not see it until now. I am glad you could finally hear NSG in person and thanks for the review.
His concerts are one of a kind and his durbar and durbAri kAnaDA are worth hearing.
I wonder if someone has his tour schedule which he or she could share with us...

Are there more than one ni ri ni ri ga ma gari sa tillAnAs? I have no idea how pUrvi sounds but the one I am familiar with sounds a lot like hamsAnandi. Does pUrvi resemble hamsAnandi?
I too thought hamsAnandi at the concert but had doubts then itself. The clear distinction is M2 in hamsAnandi.
The two ragas differ in Ma - M1 in pUrvi and M2 in hansAnandi.
The scale is similar otherwise except that there is Pa in descent in pUrvi.
pUrvi: SR1G3M1D1N3S/SNDPMGRS
hansAnandi: SR1G3M2D1N3S/SNDMGRS
I am not familiar with pUrvi too

KVN's rendition, sometimes labelled Hamsanandhi and sometimes Poorvikalyani, but the same as MDR's: http://www.sangeethamshare.org/murthy/1 ... eri---RTP/
