Concert unfortunately cancelled owing to unavoidable circumstances. Please ignore
the rest of this post.

Hello and greetings to all.

I am happy to inform rasikas in the Boston area that Smt. Kalpagam Swaminathan, a
renowned and senior veena artist who has been discussed often on this forum, will be
giving a concert at Harvard University on April 7th. The concert is organized by MIT Swara
and Harvard Sangeet (both student groups), as well as the New England Academy of Carnatic Music.

The details of the concert are as follows:

Vidushi Smt. Kalpagam Swaminathan (Veena)

Accompanied by:

Smt. Nirmala Rajasekar (Veena), Sri Pravin Sitaram (Mridangam)

Where: Lowell House, Junior Common Room, Harvard University
2 Holyoke Place, Cambridge, MA 02138

When: April 7th, 2008 (Monday) at 6.15 pm

Admission: $10 (General), Free (Students)

More details, a concert flyer, directions to Lowell House and parking info
are all at this URL:

We're really delighted and honoured to have Kalpagam Mami play here. Unfortunately we
had to schedule the concert on Monday owing to Mami's travel schedule (she has come to
Cleveland for the Aradhana, as you all know) and also due to other music events on close
by days which conflict. But despite this, we earnestly hope all rasikas in the Greater Boston/Cambridge
area can make it to this concert -- as you know, Mami's music is absolutely divine! I think it's also
been quite a long time since Boston has had a veena concert, so we're really looking forward
to it. Also, we were intending to make the concert free, but unfortunately we were forced at the
last minute to request a small admission fee owing to unforseen costs.

Also, even if you don't live in the Boston area, please do forward this on to all your friends
in the Boston area who would be interested.

Mods, if this belongs elsewhere, please free to relocate.

Wow! This will be awesome...

Sri Pravin Sitaram, who will be playing for Kalpakam Mami is my 'chitappa' and it's without [ok, minimal :-)] bias that I can post here that he is a very sensitive and supportive mridanga vidvan. Hope to see a review of this concert on this board.

Unfortunately, we are sorry to say that owing to unavoidable
circumstances, there has been a change in Kalpagam Mami's
travel plans: she will be unable to visit Boston on this
trip and we have had to cancel this planned concert. We are all really
disappointed that Mami will be unable to make it here because we
were hoping to hear such a legend live, and the Boston area has
rarely had veena concerts in the recent past.

But we hope rasikas here can at least find solace in a recording
of Mami's Cleveland concert, if one exists (hope it does, given the
rave reviews it has received in the Cleveland thread!).

Arvindt, sorry to hear about your cancellation. I had anticipated that given what I have heard around these parts (Cleveland).
There will be a CD release and broadcast at some point.....

No bias Prashant! Pravin uses his 'kelvi-gnanam' and experience to embelish kritis very well. Hope these words from a frequent Pravin listener makes up for the lack of review! :)

On another note, it is indeed unfortunate that the concert got cancelled. Here is a small compensation for those who were planning to attend (and a treat for everyone else).

Arvindt and others: Are there plans for Kalpagam Mami to visit other cities? I told about her to a few others and they all wanted to know if there are plans for her visiting a few cities here or she is going back to India after Cleveland.

I believe she is going back straight to India, if plans haven't changed
since I last heard...
