Apparently Shankar has recently rendered a number of HMB kritis. It will be very nice if they can be posted for our appreciation at the HMB thread!

S. Shankar studied initially with his mother Smt Rajamma Sastry and later with Smt Nagarathna Bai and Smt Vallabham Kalyana Sundaram. He has performed all over the country and abroad for more than three decades and has participated in several music festivals, including the Workshop conducted by the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in London and the Dasara festival in Mysore Palace. He also performs Jugal Bandi concerts with Hindustani vocalists. He has produced a number of cassettes and CDs. He is an A grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan and has directed musical features and dramas for them. He has won several awards for his performances, including the titles Sangeeta Kala Prathibhamani, Gayana Kalavatamsa, Kala Bhushana, and Sangeetha Vidyanidhi, the Best Musician Award of the Bangalore Gayana Samaj, and the Best Young Musician Award of the Music Academy in Chennai. Vidwan Shankar works as a Senior Accountant.

I have listened so far only to his Nattakurinji. He sounds really great. This is a revelation for me. He has a nice and free flowing smooth voice. I will for sure listen more and look for other aspects of his music.

Good. But then the article has also brought out certain revelations on the carnatic front. I thought all these days only the Cauvery water dispute was most predominant between the two States.

Kji can u u/l the jugalbandi of Shankar & Thurvi ( if it is not a commercial release). It is one of the best jugalbandi i have heard

coolkarni

Post by coolkarni »

rajumds.
i agree .their juglabandi is better than bmk-bhimsen joshi duet.
for the simple reason that they both sing the same lines and hence the real difference in two styles come out clearly.
but unfortunately IT IS A COMMERCIAL RELEASE.So I cannot upload it.However this album (tiltled Raag MILAN) is available in music shops across Bangalore.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seemed to me hearing him render the kalyANi piece kind of sounded like the hindusthAni yaman. Nonetheless, he has a very refreshing approach to music (love the "kuTTi" rAga essay for the nATTaikuranji piece) and hope to hear more renditions of his.

Kji,

Thanks much, as ever. Great Begada and Sharanu Sharade. The Kamboji dint play great on my computer, so not sure of the quality. Alapanai was real good, I thougght.

Sings very good. Much better than most (if not all) current day male singers.

1. The voice sounds a bit like Sanjay but has a
little base in it - definitely clearer and better
sounding than Sanjay.

2. He sings the sangatis like KVN does.

3. Good voice range and "briskness" (he is able to
traverse the notes pretty fast).

4. Very good handling of Brighas in the Alapana

5. Good Manodharma when singing widely sung and
popular Ragas which is quite a rare feat considering
the fact that Kalyani/Kamboji has been sung a million times and
every nuance of this raga has been heard by the
masses. To come up with some good lines in this raga
requires a good amount of creativity.

6. He hits some rough patches when he sings the
higher octaves, but then, almost every carnatic
musician has this problem as opposed to Hindustani
singers who pay a lot of attention to voice-culture.

7. A slightly higher Bass in his voice would have
made a tremendous difference.

8. Overall - extremely satisfying singer.

Kji: Please can u upload teh dhanyasi and Kalyani track at your convinience. Really very sorry i missed them.

what a magnificent Kedaragowlai to be followed by an equally nice Hamsanandi, beautiful Bagesri and Kapi... The shloka is on Lord Ranganatha of TiruchirappaLLi znd we should search the Vaishnava site for it. Failing which I may be able to get the words using my ear ;)

The SlOka is from SrI ranganAtha stOtra of parASara bhatta.

sapta prAkAra madhyE sarasija mukuLOdbhAsamAnE vimAnE |
kAvErI madhya dESE mRdhutara phaNirAD bhOga paryanka bhAgE |
nidrAmudrAbhirAmam kaTini kaTaSiraH pArSva vinyasta hastam |
padmAdhAtrI karAbhyAm paricita caraNam rangarAjam bhajEham ||

The rendering of the SlOka is no doubt beautiful Howver I felt the choice odd as there is no apparent connection between ranganAtha(Either of SrIrangapaTTaNa or SrIranga) and the guru of mantrAlaya, SrI rAghavEndra. Or perhaps, they are not meant to be connected at all. Yes, that may indeed be the reason. An elaborate SlOka as the penultimate piece and the dEvaranAma as the finale.

Have you identified the rAgas that Sankar sings the SlOka in? Lets have a quiz, shall we :)

I'm curious about the following names of rAgAs.

bhAgesri

bhAgeswari

bhAgyasri

It's actually the second name, the first name was somehow shortened from the second. The third was a misconception. This is what I heard. True?

Vocalist, I believe it's Vageeshwari -> Bageeshwari -> more colloquial forms

Thank you abadri, I appreciate your efforts. I don't think vAgIswari is the same scale, but I get your drift in terms of naming. If anyone else can back it up, please don't hesitate to say something about it.

Saving some admin/mod work; I shifted the rest of my reply on 'Iswari rAgAs' to: http://freepgs.com/carnatic/viewtopic.php?p=11337

Meena/coolkarni:

I was wondering whether you would be able to tell me where to studio recordings of this artist are available. Sri Sankar is definitely an artist of high caliber and merits wider reception.

Post by coolkarni »

You must be able to find two albums in music shops across bangalore.
unfortunately all my tapes are safely boxed (with no idea of what to do ith them next) after my mp3 conversion.

may be ,next time i visit bangalore , i will try and get more details.
Of course I have an appointment with Sankar too, on some other matter , during which i will try and pinch a few more concerts.

The last time we talked over phone , he was mighty pleased with the reception here , in this forum.
But then he is a very simple and unassuming person.

hamsadhwani creations, managed by vidushi M.S. Sheela released an album of muthaiah bhagavathar krithis sung by Vid. S.Shankar. A very nice collection. Sri Shankar's rendering coupled with the genius of HMB makes it for a good listening.

I am particularly liking the kambhoji composition ratnakanchukadhAriNi...
