Wow! Looks like Bangalorean organizations are putting in an all-out effort to promote Carnatic Music on an extremely grand scale this year. All those big names on the schedules are definitely going to galvanize the music atmosphere there and further put the city as a strategic classical arts destination on the Indian map.
Hopefully we'll get to hear some audios from the concerts...

Who can forget the MALI , GNB & MMI Concerts with the great CHOWDIAH not only playing but actively encouraging erveryone who was fortunate to hear Carnatic music concerts as THEY SHOULD BE HEARD.
In my opinion BANGALORE HAS FOR A LONG TIME BEEN THE PLACE FOR THE BEST CONCERTS ONE CAN HEAR. Except for the practices & private concerts in concerts in MADRAS etc artistes have felt restrained by possibilities of chances during dec season etc. Too bad many of the memorablr Bangalore concerts are not available to us bec. of various reasons. PARVATHI (Mysore) is filling in doing as admirable job.
Consequently in my opinion except for Perambur Sangitha Sabha because of Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer & the one&only SETHURAMAN the Secy THE BEST CONCERTS HAVE BEEN IN BANGALORE & TIRUCHY.......
I still get excited just trying trying to recall Bagalore Ramanavami Concerts & inspired by presence of Nettur Srinivasachar ( the great Gandhian Freedom fighter......I am delighted Bangalore is STILL THE PLACE. VKV ( FROM MADRAS!)

SORRY Vijay R,
Being a Theoretical Physicist 2018 or 2013 does not make too much difference. Actually as you might know classical newtonian time or for that matter Time as a parameter has been shown to be an unnecessary parameter to explain things! How is this explanation for explaining Senior moment Sloppiness?..... Seriously as you point out it does not change the fact about B'Lore ....VKV

Re: Bangalore Ramanavami concerts

I photoshopped this image from the FB post by Parivadini Venkat who is painting the city with his camera antics
I have assiduously avoided this Fort High School venue for over 14 years now.
I have many reasons, and I list only some here. The above illustration helps me enormously.
Rama Navami or Monkey Tamasha?
Those good old days, in a festive chappara,
As a three-year old I saw Hanuman invoking Rama in obeisance.
Many a maestro regaled us with music, that we would not forget for life.
Everything then was a sense of wonder,
And Ramanavami was a welcome musical retreat.
I would soak up the music, and think of Rama, enjoy the muddy fragrance of April showers.
Then came the huge shamiyana, courtesy Saleh Ahmed, and sponsors cheaply bannered all round.
VIP sofas, tubelights and bugs, and loudspeakers blaring more noise than music.
Pricey tickets, media inserts before Jan.1, it was all a megabucks tamasha.
All that remains now is a masquerade, a politician/money-maker affronting me as Hanuman.
Those happy memories are fragile, almost incorruptible?
I won't let today spoil what I cherish- a young Ravikiran, a splendid KVN, and a faraway gleam of Ariyakudi and GNB.

Re: Bangalore Ramanavami concerts
Sir you robbed my words in few things which you have shared. I have given FHS a miss for nearly 8 years and went back this year only. I am shocked to the extent of inviting Nandan Nilekani for Sanjay's concert to preside just couple of days before voting which was in bad tasteRsachi wrote:

Re: Bangalore Ramanavami concerts
Vani Kala Kendra of Vani Vidya Kendra, Basaveshwaranagar also conducts Ramanavami concerts for 30/31 days with variety fare of Karnatic Classical, Yakshagana, Devotional music concerts. Low profile Shri Lakshmi Keshav, himself a percussion vidwan-Tabla is the one man event manager. Print and Visual media does not give cover, unfortunately. This year Sangita Kalanidhi M.Chandrashekar was honored. Maestro TMK gave the inaugural concert on 30th March. Lot of talented young musicians get opportunities to perform.

MuniRao
You will be happy to know that both artistes and audiences like Vani Kala Kendra very much. Some friends reported great concerts this year there.
Too far for me to go
For me, Unnati is the best of the lot.

Re: Bangalore Ramanavami concerts
I beg to differ.I feel the Ramaseva Mandali is doing a commendable job in continuing SV Narayana Swamy's work. However there will be differences when you compare with olden days.Times have changed and it is very difficult to conduct music concerts without sponsorship. The quality of concerts are quite good.In the country there is a clear deterioration in every walk of life.To day we cannot get highly principled persons for any post whether political or science or economy or planning.
Yes We cannot get the older days of KVN - MC /MDR - TNK/DKJ-LGJ etc.In fact after MDR's death,I stopped listening to concerts for a few years.
The method of execution at Ramasevamandali has changed, but still one cannot take away the good work done by the.It is very easy to mock and display the events funnily.

HNB,
I wasn't mocking. I simply expressed my feelings. If you can attend concerts and get musical bliss, without the past memories like me, you're blessed. That's all.
I do find it offensive to do the front face of the pandal full of pictures and banners, with that huge picture of Hanuman as if he is a politician welcoming the janata. Sorry.

Re: Bangalore Ramanavami concerts
Last year I was there to hear vidushi a kanyakumari concert and i saw these huge posters. Lord hanuman is new from this year perhaps they could have kept a pattabhishekham photo as a photodrop. Last year around the place in one or two circles nearby i could even see a cut out in the road where the festival is advertised. Overall i think it is a good thing for bangalore to generally advertise the carnatic music in general. Also i thought this is a makeshift pandal , so that is the only place where they can put.
On a side note how is the pantry/canteen, last time i did not see much stuff to eat or drink , has that improved this year.

The front entrance could have been more sober. As such i do not spend time outside.Certainly musical value exists and many young talents are performing.
In fact there is no necessity for such posters.

Re: Bangalore Ramanavami concerts
I wish to give my impressions of the just concluded Ramanavami festival at Fort High School by Sree Rama seva Mandali.
I still cannot forget the sight of Tambura artist catching two buses to his destination carrying his tambura. The organizers should make some arrangement for dropping the tambura artists in addition to the other artists.
The strength of the crowd has diminished over the years except for say Sanjay,T M Krishna and a few others. The less said about the discipline - walk out during tani was a usual affair.I feel Rasikas can walk out but may be just before or after.
The handing over of chits to artists requesting for favorites often disturbed the rythm of concerts. The people who are enthusiastic to hand over chits concentrated only on this activity.Invariably during the middle of a detailed alapana or krithi, people passed on the chits.
My own opinion is that we should leave it to the artists and not force any requests on them.
