A wonderful concert from OST Sir. The presentation was at once both graceful anf full of vigour and swept the audience away. Violin accompaniment by Raghavendra Rao was very good especially in the RTP. Tanjore Murugaboopathy 's mridangam accompaniment was very good as well.
This team is touring the US - Watch out for their concert in your city

It was quite a concert indeed. OST mama had been conducting workshops at UM the week before the concert where he taught members of our indian music group many songs along with some fabulous anecdotes and demonstrations (including a wonderful graha bedham where he transitioned from shankarabharanam to kharaharapriya without touching the panchamam. The reason he gave for not touching them was that Semmangudi had once told him that Sa and Pa were the two unshakable notes and when graha bedham is done these notes are oscillated and it is contrary to sangeetha shastra). I complained to him that artistes nowadays arent singing many ghana ragas in concerts and he obliged singing, shri, harikambodhi, varali, kalyani, thodi and aboghi back to back. Almost reminded me of an Ariyakudi concert especially when he sang enthara neethana and eti janma.
The one thing I didn't get was his choice of navarasa kanada right after a sindhu kanada. After a half an hour Aboghi I was in the mood for one of Thyagaraja's sweet melodies but I felt that two of them felt to the ear kind of like how an overdoes of cashew kathali feels to the stomach. Having said that he did treat me to a wonderful thodi indeed. Im pretty sure he did a grahabedham on Ri to yield Harikambodhi but I felt he did it again with Ma for a little bit to get shankarabharanam (??) Either way, Im not a big fan of these illusions and crowd pleasers. It spoils the mood of the raga and I was pretty sure I saw some confused looks in the auditorium too!
Im off to Austin, TX on the 24th for the summer, so hopefully Ill get to see him a second time on the 27th and Ill post a review then!
Nadhasudha - how in the world did you pick out madhuvanti. For the life of me I couldnt figure out what raga the virutham was in - luckily the soothing familiarity of bageshri calmed my frustration. That raga however will forever be the property of sri MDR - even as OST mama sang it I was listening to a sublime sagara sayana in my head!

I am reminded of what we learnt when we were young; in order to remember the various ragas that will arise by doing 'grahabhedam(srutibhedam?)-this phrase was taught to usbhaktha wrote:R to R in Todi will yield Kalyani and not Harikamboji. M to M will yield Natabhairavi and not Shankarabaranam. I have heard OST sir often do the M to M grahabedham to result in Natabhairavi.
'shan khara todi kal hari nata'
