I thought speech was intelligible and it was writing that was legible or illegible! :P

Dear Friends,
I want to write these comments As a person who spent quite a bit of time with LGJ JUST RECENTLY-after spending a couple of months in Chennai & returned to USA on March22nd'08- & EMPHATICALLY WANT TO REFUTE THE STATEMENT THAT "His speech is still not legible"-. I was talking to him both in person & over the phone SEVERAL TIMES- there are others who did the same thing too- and there were ZERO PROBLEMS understanding what he said; As a matter of fact I have had the privilege & great good fortune of dealing with him since 1950 & I can ASSERT he is as sharp as the first day I met him.
Just because he had some set back in his health recently I feel one should not be harping on UNSUBSTANTIATED non-existent problems. I do not know who Shobha Warrier is & whether she wrtote what has been quoted here. If She really wrote that I WOULD HAVE TO CONCLUDE THAT THAT SHE IS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE NUANCES OF THE LANGUAGE OR KNOW ANYHING MUCH ABOUT MUSIC ESP. CARNATIC MUSIC.
At any rate WE can ALL learn from his discipline, unbelievable creative GENIUS, and positive attitude , teaching & creativity. I wish I could be one ten thousand as sharp, intelligent, creative, at his current age as I was at my peak! I am a ph.d in physics& optics with over 400 papers, worked in U.S.Space Program & retired from Los Alamos National Laboratory & would be considered a great success by most persons. Let us not harp on USELESS things like some one is great but he walks with a limp or he wears thick glasses etc; Instead let us CELEBRATE we were fortunate lto have lived in the time when the GREAT LALGUDI was in our midst & shared his GENIUS with us mere mortals. vkv

spoken like someone with training in aphasiology :P In rshankar's case, that is probably true.
On a more solemn note, I am deeply saddened by the mahavidwan's state of health. How cruel it must feel to not be able to play the violin....

Thank you for the link. I don't think it would be prominent enough to hit upon on Rediff - and it is always really interesting to read interviews of the great.

That is a wonderful article.

He spoke about his relationship with music in a way that, even for those us who are miles away from such a relationship, seemed simple, down-to-earth and deeply moving.

I had no idea of his current state of health, it must be recent, since the academy award?

Whilst life and faculties remain, I am sure that his life, somehow, will remain full of music, even if it may not come out through the fingers.

His stroke was alomost 2 years ago, IIRC. He is recovering with rehab, from what I hear.
