mai sAvare kE rang rAcI

sAj singAra bAndh pag ghungaUr lOk lAj taj nAncI
Adorning myself and putting ghungharoos on my feet, i gave up all the wordly rules an danced

gayI kumati layI sAdhu sangati shyAm prIt jag sAncI
my bad thouhts went away and i associated with saintly beings. The love for ShyAm (kRSna) is the only truth in this world.

gAye gAye hari guN nisadin kAl vyAl rI bAncI
by singing the glories of hari day and night i saved myself from the pangs of the snake of time.

shyAm biNA jag khAro lAgat jagrI bAtAn kAncI
without krsna this world is bitter and all the other wordly engagements are incomplete

mIrA siri giradhar naT nAgar bhagati rasIlI jAncI
mIrA has realised that devotion to Sri Giridhar is very sweet

Additionally, the late mahArAjapuram santAnam renders the pallavi as " meytO sAvariyA kI ranga nAcI."

Krishnaa, I have a couple of questions for you:
1. kAl vyAl - can it not also mean the vortex (vyAl) of time (kAl)?

2. In the dialect that mIrA composed, is nAgar the same as 'prabhU' in hindi (Lord)?

Meera's bhajans/compositions have numerous allusions to lOk lAj/nAt kahE kul nAsI etc. They refer to the fact, that as the rANI of cittOr, she was not supposed to make a spectacle of herself, dancing and singing in ecstacy with the common man. In addition, her devotion to krishNa caused her to neglect her social and royal duties as well - but mIrA did not care for the ways of the world (lOk lAj), or her in-laws (nAt) labeling her as one who destroys (nAsI) the reputation of their dynatsy (kul). She felt that she was rAdhA re-incarnate.

mIrA's perception of krishNa was made profound by its very deceptive simplicity.

In one of her compositions, this is how she describes him:

kOi kahE siri rAm hai kyA
yA gowrI kAlI maiyyA

Someone (kOi) asks/says (kahE) is the one in your heart (kyA) SrI rAm? Or are you devoted to gowri/kAlI mA.

mein kahUn nahI gOpAl hai wOh ik
ban mein carAvE gaiyyA

I (mein) tell (kahUn) them, Oh NO! He (wOh) is (hai) just a (ik) cowherd (gOpAl) who grazes (carAvE) cattle (gaiyyA) in (mein) the forest. (ban)

umA patI parmEswar nahI
nA nArAyan bhai hArI

He is not (nahI) SivA (parmEsvar), the husband (patI) of pArvatI (umA), or (nA) Lord nArAyaNA who destroys (hArI) fears (bhay)!

mIrA kA hriday vihArI ang pitAmbar,
mOr mukuT sar, mAlA galE suhAvE

The resident (vihArI) of (kA) mIrA's heart (hriday) looks very pleasing (suhAvE) because he wears pitAmbar on his body/limbs (ang), sports a crown (mukuT) of peacock (mOr)feathers on his head (sar), and a garland (mAlA) of wild flowers around his neck (galE).

I think this vision of him helped her to hold on to the thought that she could attain him physically.

Ravi,
thanks so much for your help.
For your questions,
yes kAl vyAl could the vortex of time. As far as nAgar, there is no exact english translation of the word. The nearest meaning would be the intellectual Lord or all wise Lord. I will try to further search this and let you know.

I am on a holiday and will be returning back home soon, i will be able to be back on the forum regularly.
