Hello everyone!
Wondering if any of you would be kind enough to post some information about the Dharmavathi ragam regarding such aspects as whether there is a specific time of day it is to be sung, what mood does it evoke, and if there are any interesting stories about this ragam (such as it being the main ragam for compositions worshipping any particular deity, or whether it was dear to any of our legendary musicians).
I would really appreciate your insight, thanks!

Dharmavati is a very beautiful ragam which can be sung at any time of the day acc to SSP. But I find it very pleasent to sing in the evenings before the sunset, after 5.00 Pm. Yes, it evokes Bhakti. But , I think it is a flexible ragam We can bring in differnt moods, even anger!!!.
Dikshithar's Ramachandrasya Daasoham and Parandamavathijayati
Bhajana Seya Rada by Mysore Vasudevacharya are the most famous(I think so)

Trust all of you have not missed the Dharmavathi RTP posted by Coolkarni under the Lalgudi thread. In one of the LPs, TNS has rendered a RTP of this raag. Similarly, L Subramaniam has done that. These two are commercial recordings.
There is a thin line of distinction between Dharmavathi and Madhuvanthi. "Nanda Nee En Nila" sung by SPB and tuned by Dakshinamurthy is a beautiful piece on Madhuvanthi.

Kiran,
In my opinion, carnatic Madhuvanti is the same as Hind. Madhuvanti. Their scales are both N3 S G2 M2 P N3 S' S' N3 D2 P M2 G2 R2 S. However, I do agree that people often mistake one for another! However, there is no scalewise equivalent of Dharmavati in HM. The proximity of CM Dharmavati and HM Madhuvanti is exploited in Many jugalbandhis. For more information on HM Madhuvanti (aka Ambika) refer

(or google: sawf multani)

I have put up a madhuvanthi clip (of balsara-kalyani roy) on the Hindusthani thread.
Here is another AMAZING track !
Unfortunately we only have the partial track .But the silver lining is that the best part has been captured here .
Convinces me that a vocal duet of CM-HM is best achieved with RTPs.
From a duet of a RTP (Madhuvanthi-Dharmavathi) by TNS-Ajoy Chakravarthy

I think gitapriya is right on the composer. Refer: http://www.karnatik.com/c2145.shtml. If the audio is available we'll be able to ascertain the composer.gitapriya wrote:

Could you be kind to reupload this song? I think its by vengkaTagiriyappa and not HMB although the notation is printed in the book of the latter's compositions.rshankar wrote:I thought I would post some tracks that helped me undertand a liitle bit (VERY little, I have to 'fess up) about this rAgam:

"mangAmbudhi hanumantA" and the pallavi by TNS (pAliMcu bangAru kAmAkshi) are my favorites in this rAga.

The video artistes are the Karnataka artistes Manasi Prasad and Smitha Bellur featured at the Bharat Sangeet Utsav 2008.
Manasi is a disciple of RK Padmanabha and Smitha a disciple of Pt Arjunsa Nakod. The latter has a web page at www.smitabellur.com

I heard 2 Dharmavathis by Hyd Bros over the last year...both were brilliant and completely different from each other...but an MIL TNS recording is my favourite. In my experience the raga can become a little boring if not handled well...HM Madhuvanti (not exactly similar but shares the scale) OTOH is always appealing..

..and there was one in the last week fort school concert of Hyderabad Brothers. Needless to say, it was brilliant too..vijay wrote:I heard 2 Dharmavathis by Hyd Bros over the last year...both were brilliant and ..
Infact, this has been a dharmavathi season at Fort School ? Atleast 3 elaborate rendering I witnessed. Yesudas ( Enanitu mechisuvEnO ), Sri N Ramani ( bhajanasEya ) and Hyd Brothers ( parandhAmavathi jayati)..
