Hamko man ki shakti dena, man vijay kare
Doosron ki jay se pehle, khud ko jay karen
I used to sing this in school as part of morning prayer right from Class 1 to 12, unmindful of what it meant. Have I got the second line right? What does it mean?
Hamko man ki shakti dena

Hum ko man ki shakti dena, man vijay kare
Dusaron ki jay se pahale, khud ko jay kare
Bhedabhav apane dil se saaf kar sake
Doston se bhool ho to maaf kar sake
Zooth se bache rahe, sach kadam bhare
Dusron ki jay se pahale, khud ko jay kare
Mushkile pade to hum pe itana karam kar
Sath de to dharam ka, chale to dharam par
Khud pe hausala rahe, bade se naa dare
Dusaron ki jay se pahale, khud ko jay kare
Hum ko man kee shakti dena, man vijay kare
Dusaron ki jay se pahale, khud ko jay kare !!
O God, give us strength to overcome our mind (ourselves)
before attempting to conquer others, conquer oneself
Let us cleanse our mind of discrimination (of persons)
Let us try to forgive the mistakes of friends
Let us discard falsehood and follow the path of truth
Whatever the difficulties in the path, we will continue to work
We will tread the path of righteousness with the blessings of Dharma
We will possess self confidence to fight evil
The following explanation taken from another blogspot:)
I think the verse 'doosro ki jay se pehle, khud ki jay kare' has a profound meaning. It asks each of us to be proud of who we are, our heritage culture, our strengths and abilities. As a kid it so much important to believe in oneself and strengthen his faith in himself. Philosophically, 'I am that' as in the Advaita can be recalled in the same context.
Amazing song, my favourite too!

Very thoughtful lyrics. I listened to a melodious rendition of this in youtube:
