One also finds "zha overenthusiasm" at times - found "(tAzh saDaiyum) neeL muDiyum" written as "nIzh muDiyum" in one of the older posts right here...

Apparently they used to have quizzes here in the past...

Light-hearted puzzles like this one are a weak substitute, I must admit.

The opening shot of the Movie North By North West could have started with this image ,scrolling down the screen, with these words.

Once upon a Time ,
There lived this great Hitch,
A stickler for every single Dime,
He made Hollywood Rich.

Here is the story of a Man on the Go
Or was it a Man on the Run,
Either Which way ,
North By Northwest is absolute Fun.

1. A British Collector by name 'mAmlan' stayed in that area - that is why that name.
2. There was once a big temple 'mA ambalam' in that area - the present Krishnaveni Theatre was that temple.

Choose whatever you want.

BTW in Triplicane there is bridge called 'Barber's bridge'. I will leave it as a puzzle to be solved.

From what I have heard from my family who used to live around that area during the turn of the last century is:

Hamilton Bridge --> Ambattan Varavadi ->Barber's bridge

By the way the immortal MALI lived in an flat very near Barber's bridge & I used to vist him often there!.....As a matter of fact I visited him the day after he was a no show at a concert at the most famous music locale in Chennai. I had requested Kshira Saagara from him for that concert. He asked me to sit down & played it for an hour! It may have been a different time & era but this was TYPICAL of all the GREATS of the Golden Age. While they knew you knew NOTHING & were a nodody they still treated you as Rasika & thats all that mattered! vkv

There used to be 'CM walks' in Chennai organized by rasikas a few years ago. Not sure if these are still on these days. Participants would meet up for coffee, then walk along famous musicians' residences etc. Perhaps rasikas forum can revive this tradition?

The following post gives you a flavour...
http://zweiundvierzig.blogspot.com/2005 ... day-2.html

Excerpt:
"The house where Veena Dhanammal lived on Tambu Chetty Street was the second last stop on the walk. This lady, one of the greatest veena player lived here for her last phase of life. Her style, which was later on popularised by Brinda-Mukta has come to be known as Dhanammal Bani, could be said to be the only Gharana kind of school in Carnatic music. She gave a concert (attendance by-invitation only) at her home every friday for which people like G.Kasturi of Hindu, T.T.Krishnamachari, etc. frequently attended. Like every other heritage structure, this house has been purchased by one Mr.Jain for Rs. 27 Lakhs. He intends to knock it over and construct a new house. Sriram was surprised that the house was still intact as it was scheduled to be knocked over few days earlier. Since it may be his chance to be at the house, he decided to sit on the steps of the building while he narrated many stories related to Danammal and the house."

These were the Sangeetham heritage walks that conducted by Sriram V and Sanjay Subrahmanyam. I have been on the George Town walk and found it really interesting and informative.

One evening, a shephard from some isolated remote hills descended onto a township. He was by the town well when he heard the call to prayer from a mosque. Having never encountered this sound before he enquired of a passerby as to what it could be. The shocked townsman replied, "This is the call to prayer, of course!". The shephard asked, "What is prayer?" to which the man who was by now getting very agitated replied, "prayer is supplications to God Almighty". Then the shephard asked "what is God?". The man got very angry and said " where are you from that you don't know what God is, God is the all powerful creator etc etc?" so the shephard said " please don't get angry but answer one final question for me, Is the call to prayer harmful to the sheep?". The man said "no, of course not!". The shephard then said " well then let him do it."

Great story, Govindan!

VK,
Hamilton Bridge turning into Barber's Bridge shows how we as humans overcome difficulties--even when challenged verbally. Hamilton pronounced in a different way might have struck the hearer that what he heard was ambaTTan (what is that word a corruption of?).At one point of time, there could have been a number of barbers living around the bridge there. That is how names of places and things come about. A naDUt teru (Central Avenue), even if it is at a remote corner of a town today, WAS the central most street at one time. Many pudUr (puttUr)s--new towns are centuries old.

As for Mambalam, 'kanDupiDi' Ur is apt, from my experience in finding houses (old number, new number) and so on. By the way, mAmalan the britisher, was he Macmillan?

Another writeup on this topic:
http://chennaionline.com/musicseason200 ... ason27.asp

Music walk at George Town

www.sangeetham.com held the George Town walk on the December 21 with Sriram.V and Swarna Rethas taking a group of 25 music and heritage lovers on a trip to the area. The walk covered King George V’s statue, the Gokhale Hall on Armenian Street and then went on to Tiruvottiyur Tyagier’s house on Ramaswamy Street.

Then came the Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple on Devaraja Mudali Street, where Rajarathinam Pillai gave one of his earliest performances in Madras. This was followed by Manali Muttukrishna Mudaliar’s residence on Govindappa Naicken Street.

Next came Veena Dhanammal’s house on Ramakrishna Chetty Street. Participants went into the house and viewed the room where the famed Friday concerts were held.

A visit to the Tiruvannamalai Matam Hall followed, where Maha Vaidyanatha Sivan had once quelled Madras Venu. The last stop was M L Vasanthakumari’s birthplace at 108 Anna Pillai Street.

The walk concluded with breakfast at The Classical Stores.

Actually as I have heard it was
Hampton Bridge --> Ambattan Varavadi ->Barber's bridge
Mr Hampton was the engineer who commissioned that bridge!
Tamil's are not that hard of hearing to make Hamilton into ambaTTan :)

Arasi,
This shepherd who asks 'what is God' - is he antithesis of that shepherd - who was nailed in the cross - for talking about God? I feel not. There were many such shepherds and cowherds born in this Earth only to tell conceited humanity to live like that shepherd who asks 'what is God'? But their message have gone waste and the humanity has only 'progressed' from bad to worse.

What is the avail of all this intellectualism and the consequent arrogance of man being on the top of food chain? How would it be like 20 human beings each tied to their legs and strung on the handle bar and carrier of cycle carried to slaughter house like the poultry being taken every day in the streets? How would it be like culling a million humans just because one of us has been infected by virus - like the poultry again?

IMHO this is the nakedness that stands out in the words of 'Godless' shepherd.

This tamil script does not appear correctly for me. For eg. the "i" mathra appears after the letter rather than before, the "o" mathra appears after the letter rather than surround it etc.

Is this the way it appears to everyone or am I using the wrong font?

Any help appreciated.

sureshvv, you need to do the following on your computer:
1. Start > Control Panel
2. Choose 'Regional and Language Options'
3. Click on 'Languages' tab
4. Click flag for 'Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages'

You may need to re-start the computer, when you would be able to see the scripts correctly.
