It was a nice concert. The AlApanais of kalyANi and sAvEri were both done beautifully. All the kritis were rendered very well. The svarams were all off beat and employed a lot of dhATTu prayOgams particularly. The madhuvanti AlApanai was very much making one expect a Pallavi. The accompanists were good.

bharath

PS: i m hoping people will write longer comments on this concert

The Mohanam was a good start. There was a short round of Swarams. To me, the second piece Nee Daya Rada was the pick of the concert. It was very well rendered. Harikambhoji Alapanai was good. Anandabhairavi and Kambhoji pieces were relatively rare and well sung. And yes, the Madhuvanthi had several people expecting a Pallavi.

Thanks Bharath - good to hear about a Sanjay concert after the flurry of TMKs over the last few weeks! I guess going by the trend he had set a few months back, you could be pardoned for anticipating an RTP in Madhuvanti!

Thank you bharath.
Sanjay's concert review on the forum appears after a long while. I have not seen one since he went back home after touring Europe.
As expected, a varied list. He has chosen such emotive krutis for the concert. I notice that there was no varNam (nor is it found in the middle of the concert list!).
Wish I had heard the vinatA suta vAhanuDai in hari khAmbOji. An unheard kruti for me and with RNS too, in a favored tAgA. KalyANi is invariably sung with relish by Sanjay.

Vijay,
Your boss should look at weekend concert schedules in various cities before sending you off on trips...

I remember, when I was working in the Admn. office of a bank in Chennai (Madras) , so many years back, how my DGM,(who himself was and ardent CM fan) used to grant me 10 days leave for the Dec. season on the condition that I must, on my return, give him a detailed report of every concert I attended, which I gladly did.
Being the admn. office, we had no pressure of the 'half-yearly-closings'.
This enabled me to attend the 'Dec-Season' continuously for so many years.
I recall those days with nostalgia.

could be.

the last line of sAhityam went something like "krishNa rAjEndruni rakshinchu chamuNDi" or something. so i guess it must be a composition of krishan rajendra wodeyar. however, it could be somebody in his court or so...

Let me review this in a poetic style.

On the occasion of 115th Jayanthi of Mahaperiyaval, the stage was set for a wonderful evening. Surprising drizzle for 10 minutes created “sand aromaâ€

The event was to commemorate the birthday of Kanchi Maha periyavar. And the harikamboji kriti is said to be composed by Thyagaraja describing the Garuda Seva at the Kanchi temple.

Thyagaraja Kriti - Vinataa Suta Vaahanudai - Raga Hari Kaambhoji

vinatA suta vAhanuDai-harikAmbhOji

In the kRti ‘vinatA suta vAhana’ – rAga harikAmbhOji, zrI tyAgarAja describes the beauty of procession of Lord varadarAja at kAncipuraM.
(As per remarks available in the book of TKG, this kRti is believed to be not written by srI tyAgarAja, but sung by certain lineage of disciples of srI tyAgarAja.)

Gist

Word-by-word Meaning

Thank you sastrigal for the poetic set up to go with the review and song list. Don't understand why you quoted "fortunate" other than that you are prone to excessive quoting :-)

Beg to differ with sastrigal on the accompaniments. Both were top class without being intrusive,

Thank you Hindolam for your efforts in giving the details of Kriti. Sanjay took this kriti because it is connected to Vaikasi month, which is the current Tamil month.

Even Bhajara (Kalyani) was rendered because of Vaitheeswaran Koil, being Angaraha Kshetram and the concert was on Tuesday.

One more point is- listening to the beautiful kriti of SS (Saveri), the pallavi goes like this.

"durusugA k.rpajUci santata-
marogad.rDhasharIramuga salupunanu"

From my limited knowledge on sanskrit, I guessed SS is praying for a good health and other things. I could not stop thinking of his family's condition (being discussed in segment of this site.)

On the occasion of Mahaperiaval Jayanthi, there was no song on Him and even Guru for that matter. How come the senior vidwan did not keep that in mind before selecting songs? I was expecting "Punniyam oru khodi" in Kiravani composed by Periasamy Thooran, but there was no song to mark the occasion. Even none of the fellow review-posters did observe and mention about it here, and that was the reason I waited till now to share my feelings! Anyway all is well that ends well!

The song by St.Tyagaraja on Garuda Seva at Kanchipuram, is, "Varadaraja Ninnu Kori, VacchitiMrokeraa " in raga Swarabhushani, set to Roopaka tala. Swarabhushani is a sister / allied raga of Devamanohari, S g m pd n s, S n d pm r s- ( R varjyam in ascending order and the vakra pattern 'sndn' missing in the descending order). The swaras are the same as that of Devamanohari.
