yes krishna started off with the anupallavi.. I think this version in todi is closer to the one of Dandapani Desikar's Nandanar. I am not sure who tuned it... himself (may be papanasam sivam).. the other version is in nattai kurinji... But i have heard that some of the original text indicate that the song was in todi to begin with.....
I have also heard a different words used in the anupallavi
pavi ezhai
pavi nandan
i think it the politically correct one for the original

His punnagavarali and Kalyani were just out of the world. In the Behag Javali, (after the main piece in kalyani)
krishna had some neraval and kalpanaswaram .. kinda unusual but awesome...
