It was a nice concert. The elaborations of sAmA was very nice. The choice of kritis was very refreshing. It felt very good to hear usually unheard pieces in bhairavi and mOhanam. The neraval for the main was done beautifully. Over all the kalpitam and manOdarmam were both much enjoyable. The accompanists were very good. Sri Muraidharan gave fitting replies thro' the concert. Sri Arun Prakash played very sensibly and gave an enjoyable tani.

No doubt it was a wonderful concert. Sanjay never disappoints rasikas. One can feel the difference in every concerts. KUDOS Sanjay Sir.!
But I regret very much for Mr.Srinivasn's speech that Sanjay would get next birth as an "Iyengar" and even in this birth he has an "Iyengar" wife! What did he mean to say, GOD only knows! So, if anyone sings a song on Perumal, he or she would get next birth as an Iyengar? Is it written anywhere or is it a doctrine? Similarly if anyone sings on Sivan, he or she would be Saivite and can we apply the same logic in terms other GODS viz. Lord Buddha, Lord Jesus and Prophet Allah and so on.!? And his speech clearly favours only the Brahmin Community because the term "Iyer" and "Iyengar" exist only in that community. Utter Non-Sense speech it was! Of course, people who attend concerts regularly at TTD know very well that Mr.Srinivasan always talks something irrelevent to the concert and the artists!

A third time revised song list! Thanks to all--which goes to show that the 'choice of kritis was very refreshing and most kritis were unheard of'--as Bharath points out. One can feel the difference indeed, in such a concert, as Madhavan says.
As for the speech, wonder where Nick is. We have to put up with boring speeches--and also inane ones. To say that Sanjay brought the vaishNava hymn to life is one thing. To have a preference of one's own about his caste in his next janmA (another subject for debate in the Bhakthi Section!) is out of place. Then again, it was not a naidu or any other caste outside the brahmin fold that came to the speaker's mind!

Wasn't this a Smt MSS signature piece in the 80's? I have heard Sri TNS and Smt. Gayatri Girish sing this in the recent past. I absolutely love the lines chosen for neraval by Sri Sanjay - 'mArajanakan, karuNAlayan, anbar tunbam agala mangaLam aruLvAn' - the other set of lines in this composition that are very enjoyable are: 'pUraNan, tirumagaL maNavALan, pArkkaDalil aravaNai tuyil varadan, punid(t)a garuDa vAhanan, nIlamugil pOlum mEni azhagan'

Referring to post No. 4 and 8; the one song that came to my mind is 'MAramaNan UmAramaNan' in Hindolam; what a song -praising Vishnu and Shiva simultaneously!
Many of the words mentioned by rshankar in his post are found in this song.
The whole essence of 'Ekam sat viprAhA bahuda vadanti' is in this song I feel.-in the words

Very good concert. I agree with Shri Madhavan regarding the post concert comments made by Shri Srinivasan. Shri Srinivasan, as is his wont, made those childish, undignified and silly observations. In the normal course, even the artist would have been embarassed. Only Lord Venkateswara should come to our rescue and help Shri Srinisavan make mature remarks before/after the concerts. The spokesperson may restrict himself to that day's performance and if necessary seek the blesssings of Lord Venkateswara and his consort for the welfare of all the artists and the rasikas as well.

A few other observations. The hall was simply perfect for the concert I thought. It was small (and air conditioned), by virtue of which there was a lot 'kaLE' to the concert. One thing about small concert halls is the details that it tends to bring out.For Eg: I thought Sanjay's Uchcharana was impeccable.One could make out pretty clearly each word of the sahitya. At the same time a couple of voice lapses at tarasthayi Ma in Bhairavi and Ga in Mohanam were also immediately evident.I dont know whether sanjay sings at the same shruti normally coz I thought he was struggling at Tarashayi.
As other's pointed out, Sama was the pick of the day.Even before he could finish the first phrase of the alapana, it was evident it was Sama. Nothing more quintessentially carnatic than that. Bhairavi was rendered with a lot of gusto with great emphasis on Ma and Ni.The kriti was crisp and rendered neatly. The sarvalaghu swaras that rained were bursting with the kind of energy is only seen in the monsoon season in western ghats.I simply loved it. Mohanam kriti was rendered with a lot of bhava. I liked the way nagai handled mohanam but not so much bhairavi. Mridangam was excelent I thought.There was no 'kutt'ing, just restrained optimal strokes enhancing the overall effect,thoroughly enjoyable.
Sanjay has lost weight since the last time I saw him at London a couple of months back.I like the way he modulates the decibel level of his to produce effects of a grand reentry.This was specially evident in his mohana alapana. im also impresses by the way he uses phrases like 'Ha', 'Ahu', 'uhua' etc during alapana to greatly enhance the birka effect.
Overall I can state that sanjay's manodharma is in a really 'uchchraya sthithi'.lucky to be present at the concert

Not just the 80's, it was probably all through her career, starting from the 1930s all the way into the 1990s. She sang it so often in her concerts of 1950s and 1960, we could probably say the frequency was 1 in 3 to 4. Even though pOlagam rAmayyar wrote the song, it was MS who breathed life into it.rshankar wrote:Wasn't this a Smt MSS signature piece in the 80's?
