A famous Sabha of hyderabad South Indian Cultural Association entered into its Golden Jubilee year on 26 May,2008.On this occasion a concert by Sanjay Subhramanyam was organised. He was accompanied on the violin by Shri M.R Gopinath who was really amazing.
The concert began in tha Kanada varnam followed by 'Bhavanutha Na' of thyagaraja in Mohanam.Swarakalpana at the pallavi line was good.Next came elaboration of Reethigowla followed by Nannu Vidachi a wonderful krithi,,.which was loved by everyone present there,Next he went for the Alapana of Nagaswarali which was really worth mentioning followed by the krithi of Muthuthandavar.Shiva chidambarame with a swarakalpana at the pallavi line.Dikshitar's krithi in Khamas came next.the main piece was ThOdi .The raga elobaration depicted the command of Sanjay over it.He renderd the alapna in such a wonderful way that all the ways in which thodi's beauty could be revealed were covered.A master piece of Thyagaraja Jesinadella Marachithivo was rendered in a wonderful way.The Thaniavarthanam by Shri Neyveli Venkatesh and Shri Tiruchchi Murali was indeed astonishing. They put up a wonderful show.None of the audience got up even during the Thaniavarthanam.Everybody loved it.He took up RTP in the raga Bhageswari[bhagesri] It was truly amazing..!!! The thanam was rendered with great comand. The pallavi line ' KA Va Va Vela Va' Was rendered beautifully. The swarakalpana was done in Valaji and Varali...Sanjay suddenly shifted to the kriti of Papanasam Sivan and sang the entire krithi Ka Va Va in Varali. It was really fantastic. No one ever thought that he would do this. The post-main items consisted of Two viruthams.the first one was renderd in behag followed by Sri MAdhava of Papanasam Sivan. Then came the Yamankalyani composition of Thyagaraja. Then came up a Tamizh Krithi in Jonpuri "Vettavil .." [ As i cannot understand Tamizh perfectly i could not make out the lines properly. But i noticed that the audience enjoyed it thoroughly.]The lines were rendered in Jonpuri first and the ending line of al the charanams was also sung in Anandabhairavi.I remember that this song had a line "thAvaram illAi thanakkoru veedillai thEvaram edhukkaDi kudumbAi thE varam edhukkadi" It was very nice. Then finally came the virutham in Surati.the last line was rendered in Bimplas followed by Maname Kanamum of Papanasam Sivan in Bimplas. It was truly an astonishing concert. It ended with Pavamana-Sowratram-thyagaraja
[I am just a learner and i am just 16yrs old.If i made any mistakes in posting the review please correct me.Thank you.].

Thanks so much revanth552. What a wonderful review
Wow ! Must have been a terrific Bhageshri RTP . And to connect during an RTP the Sivan Masterpiece Ka Vaa Vaa after the Ragamalika featuring Varali , is indeed a masterstroke by Sanjay. His ability to spring surprises is limitless

Your review of Sanjay's concert was excellent, Revanthv552. Probably you have started learning music already.
You have made a mention of the Reethigowla kruthi of Thyagaraja as wonderful. It is from Thyagaraja's opera 'Prahlada Bhakthi Vijayam'. If you want to know more about the raga itself you can go to Arun's site http://sunson.wordpress.com/ where Arun has put together a beautiful compilation of this raga's details.
That the tani avarthanam thrilled you is no surprise. Neyveli Venkatesh plays khanjari also just as superbly.

revanthv,
veTTaveLitanil is by kudambak kavirAyar. KVN in recent times made it memorable. One of my favorites. How I wish I had heard it! Hope Sanjay would sing it some time during the coming season.
I am glad Neyveli Venkatesh was appreciated for his performance. Whether it is kanjira or mrudangam, his playing is very pleasing to listen to.

I posted the recording of the concert in MP3 format at: http://satyasense.blogspot.com/2008/05/ ... anjay.html. I hope you will all like it.
Thanks to Revanth and Lakshaman. I didn't know the names and lyrics of the tamil songs.

arasi - I just heard Sri Vijay Siva's recording of this and he sings SentAmarai. As you know how Tamil-impaired I am, do let me check it up again - I don't have access to Sri KVN's version right now, but I am pretty sure it's the same.
I sing verses 1, 2, 16, 22, 24, 28 and 30 [not all of them all the time except for Verse 1].

Prashant,
A gnAni who roams like a lifeless body (like a dead man--cettAraippOle) does not need kai+tALam. It refers to capLAk kaTTai or any rhythmic accompaniment--if the word IS kaittALam...

Wish I had Lakshman's patience and devotion.
If you would like the meaning of the verses that are sung in concerts--going by Prashant's post (do not know which lines Sanjay chooses to sing)...
Here they are:
kudambai (a woman) kudambAi--addressing her (like aDiyE in songs). A refrain.
Corrections welcome.
1: Those who are happy with the open air as a place for living, need no deeds of ownership for a house.
2: The nyAni (gnAni) who radiates with the the knowledge of the very Truth, needs no remedies, medicines (kaRpangaL) to be well, to be cured. Incidentally, kaRpangaL also means 'intoxicating weeds'--there is a reference to that too, perhaps.
16: Those who can freely roam the hills of citrakUDam need no other possessions, security, comfort or beauty. The word pattiram has this many meanings and more!
22: One who has trained himself in eschewing impulsive behavior--is there a need for him to practice yOgA?
24: See post 14.
28: Those who roam the hills have mangoes to eat, they do not go seeking tender coconut water in the plains. They are not particular. The mAngAip pAl here may even refer to the sticky unsavory sap, to contrast it with the delightful coconut water.
30: One who has neither a resting space nor a house has no need for holy hymns.
31: (I am adding it since it says it all in a line).
Those who have knowledge of oneself and feels one with the Almighty have no use for worldly desires.

Assuming that this is in the same philosophicl line as the rest of the song (and not an atheistic statement about the plight of the homeless ), I am reminded of my own wrong interpretation of Bhaja Govindam starting line. Having read a little bit about Advaitha, I thought Shankara is talking about 'It is foolish to recite hymns like Baja Govindam Baja Govindam if you have reached a higher state of consciousness"30: One who has neither a resting space nor a house has no need for holy hymns.

Quite interesting. What was the thala of the RTP? If different from Ka Va Va song in Varali, how was the transition to the Ka Va Va accomplished? Did he go back to the RTP Pallavi line at the end or ended it with the Ka va va song as if it is a stand alone song? Just curious.
