It was a good concert. The kritis were presented well. The manOdarmam was good also. Usage of the dhaivatam in the nATTai piece and preferential usage of 'm d s' in the main piece were notable features of the manOdarmam. The violinst was good. The mrudangist played with great anticipation. His tani was nice.

i was indeed lucky to be there for that concert in the music academy also. the rtp he sang was one of the best i have ever heard and i just couldnt associate his age with his singing. he surely is way beyond par in comparison to the other youngsters his age. if i remember correct, it was kambhoji.
Vkraman - i agree with u as well. i wish he gets more popularity. I had to tell my family in chennai to go hear him since they hadnt heard him before and everyone to whom i suggest to go hear him, go speechless! i hope the US organisers consider bringing him in as well so we dont have to go to Chennai every year to listen to these young geniuses.

...........and "Veteran" Vellore Ramabhadran had to make a dirty comment on Tanjavur Ramdas's "Arai Chapu" in public during the Cleveland Fest this year. Very Annoying that a person of VR's stature had to say something like that.arasi wrote:How many years has Ramadas played the mrudangam? I don't think he has yet made it to the popularity list! Such a good player too, and every time I see him listed as the mrudangist, I look forward to the agreeable sound of his mrudangam. His able playing adds to the quality of a concert...
A very fine artiste.

Tanjore Ramadoss is a disciple of Great Palghat Mani Iyer and he has been playing for over 4 decades now having accompanied most of the vidwans and favourite for many youngsters too. The way he prepares his thoppi is simply incredible as he works hard to get the thoppi in shape by trying out various traditionally taught methods. He is such a simple man and very accommodative. He is a puritan who doesnt want to stray away from tradition taught by his Master and his playing techniques. He doesnt also want to compromise on quality for the sake of popularity. I have the great pleasure of learning from him in my formative years before joining Ramanathapuram M.N.Kandaswamy Pillai. He was very strict in each and every class shows his commitment to quality. I still remember many classes i had with him in Kittamani Iyer's House in West Mambalam, Baroda Street. I also still remember the smell of mridangam skins and the repair works that were always going on in his house goes to show the commitment of the artiste.
I have to sincerely make this statement that there is no direct relation between one's commitment and laurels. Recognition is onething whereas the internal happiness of the artiste is another thing. Dont we already have a great face in Carnatic Music, in Palani M.Subramania Pillai who died without any recognition whatsoever ? Does it mean that he was not committed to art ? Audience and Rasikas are the judges. Let the Public Authorities decide on whom to give and whom not to give. it is their prerogative.

I heard VR speak as I was leaving for the office in the morning in a hurry and so could have got this wrong, but I think VR was referring to Sri Tanjore Ramadas Rao of yesteryears and his aRai chApu and not Sri Tanjavur Ramdas of the present. He was praising Tanjore Ramadas Rao's aRai chApu but later said something to the effect that nobody plays/teaches aRai chApu today which is of course not true.dvmk wrote:...........and "Veteran" Vellore Ramabhadran had to make a dirty comment on Tanjavur Ramdas's "Arai Chapu" in public during the Cleveland Fest this year. Opinions and recognitions are what they are and the greatest attitude in an artist is what Balaji says. I believe a copy of this should appear in the SK discussion.mridhangam wrote:I have to sincerely make this statement that there is no direct relation between one's commitment and laurels.
