Observations:

1. All the songs (pre and post main) were sung with great bhava and sowkyam
2. Some of the lyrics are not pronounced clearly. People less familiar with the lyrics may find it hard to guess or interpolate.
3. The main piece and thani was sung to Tisra Triputa at double speed. Was somewhat unusual and I continued to follow in Misra Chapu

Sureshvv,

The Chaapu Taalas are derived from folk tradition and hence in major books the songs fitting into 7 beats are given as triputa tala only and hence Neyveli Sir is right in singing in Triputa Tala. It is actually Misra Chaapu Tala for our convenience if u give gaps for 3rd beat and for both the drutams of Tisra Triputa which will actually come like a Misra Chaapu Tala. We musicians also sometimes get confused but for a discerning and watchful artiste it is just Misra Chaapu Tala and whatever we play for Misra Chaapu can be easily played in that Kaalapramana also. It may sound like speeding up in Tisra Triputa since all the seven beats are shown but actually the level is the same for both of them.

yeah.. this chapu talam sampradayam is very new.. it used to be misra ekam or kanda ekam...

I remember a lecdem by smt vedavalli when she said, kanda chappu, kanda kanda chapu elam rombave pudusu.

I remember a concert a couple years back at Narada gana sabha when a student of Smt. Vedavalli (Jayanthi Keshav?) sang Rama katha sudha to a strange variant of Adi talam (memory is hazy but something like partly 1 kalai and partly 2 kalai).

dEsAdi tALam usually goes as one wave and three beats or as one wave and one tisra laghu. the wave or the vIchchu is the samam.

The former seems close to the way Teen Taal is executed by Hindustani musicians. It goes Beat, Beat, Wave, Beat with each having 4 sub units.
