The concert started on a very slow and sedate note..Program was scheduled @ 6.30pm, and artists were there. Organizers however had other idea it seems, and finally concert started around 7.15pm..TNK slowly started with naatai alapana, elaborated swara by swara, and launched into maha ganapathim, played very slowly. Evarani also was played in vilamba kalam. All the following raga alapana was played very well. After item #4, he asked audience what they want, one lady said bilahari raga, he immediately started it! I am not sure which keerthana can be termed as main!! May be, meenakshi memudam? TNK developed cramp in his bowing hand just before #7, but after few minutes, continued playing wonderful raga alapana for anandha bhairavi (and watch out, he did played reeti gowla few keerthanas before!!)
Even without any support violin, he played very well. There was sowkhyam every where.
Wait for another surprise concert review tomorrow(;- Any guesses??

Oh, just two months ago — on Rama Navami this year, 14 April, I attended his concert in which he played Khamaaz just after Hari Kambhoji. [:)] Not a single keerthana or geetham for that matter in between! He played raagam for both, and if I remember correctly, neraval and svaram for Hari Kambhoji and svarams for Khamaaz. There was at least one rhythmic improvisation in both.

srikant1987, Pardon my ignorance, I am not sure I understand the nature of your post. Please explain. What do you mean "Not a single keerthana or Geetham for that matter in between"
It is not uncommon for TNK to play Hari Kambhoji and Khammaz combo or Mohanam and Hamsadwani combo one after the other for that matter.

Yes, it is great to see similar ragas rendered back to back.. I heard that Bombay Jayshree sung Bilahari & mohana kalyani...(;-
I would like to bring discussion on another thread in Kutcheri Reviews & recordings on Abhishek Raghuram concert...It is going to be real challenging for artist and audience together when manodharma significantly changes, and artist doesn't use commonly known prayogas..

Abhishek once sang Sriranjani and Kamboji (I think, or could have been Reethigowlai) back to back and sought indulgence because it was an abbreviated concerts_hari wrote:Yes, it is great to see similar ragas rendered back to back.. I heard that Bombay Jayshree sung Bilahari & mohana kalyani...(;-

IMHO similarities between rItigowLa and Anandabhairavi are somewhat greatly exaggerated. I do not think the ragas that much closely aligned. Although they do have some similarity, both have enough differences that one should be able to showcase them apart quite easily.
However, the question may have to do more with somewhat similar bhAvam for the two, and that too resulting from pretty much the same set of swaras (sthams). That can make a concert that includes both to sound "too much of the same theme" - e.g. you do say nannu-viDachi/baDalikadIra and O-jadadamba/marivErE. But I guess one can pick a sprightly rItigowLa and a slow Anandabhairavi, or vice-versa.

intriguing question arasi actually, since I struggle to answer. The easy answer could be "yes" - but that would a blind one.
With even very similar ragas, one can pin-point the differences with the phrase, the gamaka etc. - hence on closer look we indeed can quantify it. but with bhAvam? That seems like an entirely fuzzy territory - perhaps we (i) dont know the right way to "pick them apart".
