Here are the details..

1. Bhairavi varnam -- Was full of 'vishamam..'.. He changed nadai for uttarangam part of talam in pallavi, anu pallavi & chittta swaram... (not sure what it is.. will figure out..). The varnam was rendered in 2 kalai chowkkam.. charanam was rendered in chatusram, in 1 kalai.. Varnam took about 7 minutes...

He set a good pace for rest of the concert, and i had very high expectation from rest of the concert, and was never disappointed for next 3 hours...

2. Samayamide nannu brova in kedaram was rendered leisurely. The swara prastaram was good, and most of the places he ended with Sa Ri, and sound as SaRi Samayamide... While singing the line "kamalanabha sri... (anupallavi beginning)", he employed the swara "Sa Pa Sa.." in one of the sangathi.

3. chakravakam raga alapana was very good, and there was not a single dull moment. The thyagaraja keerthana was sung with lot of emotion, bringing out the bhava clearly. With an interesting take off point, the keerthana was interesting (Same as original composition, sanjay didn't experiment here..). Singing keerthana in misra chapu taalam in the beginning of the concert definitely adds to success of the concert, and takes it a different plane altogether... There was some kannakku during swara prasatara...But was for couple of avarthanams only... I enjoy more when there are sarvalaghu swaras and less of kannakku.. So, no disappointment for me here... Some of the swaram ending combination during kuraippu were "P P D", " P - - P D", "P -- P N D"... "M - - P D"..

4. kedaragowlai alapana was rendered with full of bhava as one would expect.. Ragha bhava was clearly bought out in all pidis Sanjay employed. The keerthana was in 2 kalai, and there was no neraval and swarams.

5. Todi was given elaborate treatment... Hearing sanjay's todi is always pleasure. His traditional brigas were there, but he never over did any where..For the keerthana, no neraval was done. Swara prasatara was excellent again.. "kuraippu" swarams were interesting combinations... In the muktyai swarams, sanjay employed tishram, but during violin response, there was none..

6. RTP was excellent, i was lost totally - great exposition... Pallavi eduppu was 2-3/4 akshram, and arudhi was in ending of the word govindanA...

7. slokam in maand was very good, so is the keerthana. when he sang, the lines hare ram ram ram.. setha ram ram ram.. it was great feeling....

8. Speech was very short and very informative on forth coming programs. I don't complain on speech here(;-

Thanks Lakshman Sir.. I will correct.. I made same mistake last week in G.Ravikiran's concert...Also, there was bad guesses from my side today.. mistook chakravakam for suryakantam... varamu for bhageshri...

More notes on Varnam...

Actually he did trikalam in varnam, and also tishram.. He did this for pallavi, anupallavi and chittaswara.. He started in lower kalam, then moved to madhyama kalam, and then durita kalam... He did this in turn for each of the lines... tisram was done in 2nd kalam & 3rd kaalam...

viribōṇi ninnē kōri (trikalam and tisram)
marulu konnadirā (trikalam and tisram)
sarasuḍau dakṣiṇa dwāraka (trikalam and tisram)
sāmi śrī rājagōpāla dēva (trikalam and tisram)

And then to chitta swaram... (trikalam and tisram)..

Wonderful to listen...

Private concerts are on the rise--of the biggies too!
One needed a varam (a boon) of an invitation to hear that varamu.
Some other forumites would have been there besides brain drain. I can imagine how Vijay would have felt had he been in Bangalore and did not know about this.
We dare not even ask for that varam (u), I know!
Attendees would have been hesitant to sit in the front. Otherwise, a Sanjay's concert with empty seats? That too right in the center?

arasi madam - i informed braindrain and we both went together and listened to the concert! It is a nice feeling to listen to the concert along with braindrain, this is the 2nd opportunity i got, the first one being T.M.Krishna concert in odukkattur mutt. The hall wasn't 100% full, may be 50 to 60 people would have attended.. There is not much publicity since it is private affair.. I managed to get the invite thanks to a family friend... For T.N.Krishnan concert, i went with family, and for Sanjay, it was with BD. Neela Ramgopal attended the concert, since was in 2nd row, and we in 3rd...She was enjoying the concert very well... She is one of a talented musician from Bangalore, a middle aged lady... Hoping to hear her live soon...

Mohan - thanks for the correction in tala for keedaragowla keerthana..

Hari,
Thanks for filling us in.
I did see Neela Ramgopal sitting in the front. I recognized one other person I am acquainted with.
Neela Ramgopal is well known here on the forum as she is elsewhere for her vidvat. She is one of our members too. There was a review of her concert on Rasikas recently--the concert that you missed.
Where did it take place? Looks like a nice cosy hall...

Since a great deal of space is being devoted to the mystery of the grey haired lady in the photo, take it from one who accompanied her along with the artist of the morning, that "she is not Vidushi Neela Ramgopal". She happens to be my neighbour and a regular Sanjay concert attendee. Ms. Ramgopal was sitting just a chair away from me and was, literally, not in the frame.

Turning to more relevant issues, this new venue is interesting. Compact and well located in Jayanagar, care was taken to ensure high quality acoustics, what with the padded ceiling, well constructed stage - total capacity close to 300. Brought to mind the Nada Inbam hall in Mylapore. Organised by the Advaita Foundation, they have plenty more big ticket concerts in store.

Pity they did not know the first thing about marketing. Hardly anyone knew about the concert. If you must hold a "by invitation only" event, then you need to make sure enough people turn up. More so when the artist concerned draws packed houses wherever he performs. Hardly surprising that my mobile did not stop ringing the same evening, with irate friends asking, "Why didn't you tell me ?" Perhaps they feared excess crowds if they publicised the event, but it backfired.

All the more credit to Sanjay and his team that the poor turnout did nothing to dim his enthusiasm and creativity - already well documented earlier in this post.

Here's a final amusing footnote. Met Gayatri Vekataraghavan later the same evening at an excellent concert in my neck of the woods. Her first question to me was, "How was Sanjay's Varamu?" Brought home to me the kind of technological age we live in.

Yes Sirsub,

I could not agree with you more.
It is not the number of people who attend that matters in a chamber concert. What is paramount is that you do not have huge empty spaces staring at the artist.

sirsub,
So, we were not the only ones who missed the concert, the locals did too! Had we known, with the same technological access, from continents away, we would have spread the word and rasikAs in Bangalore that we know would have been there. Not that Sanjay would have cared. He gives the same satisfying fare irrespective of audience count or venue. Years ago, we have been to one such concert of Sanjay where the hall was full, but the venue was a tiny place. Not only was Sanjay gracious in singing for such a small audience, he also gave a grand performance.

Yes, I took the woman in red in the front with glasses (couldn't see the face well, though) to be Neela Ramgopal. My mistake! When I said an acquaintance, I meant the gray-haired distinguished looking lady (face not seen in this picture!) and I guessed who would have been sitting next to her.
I hope someone would tell us more about the concert now. Enough said about the audience...

Yes she did, but it was a regular monthly concert organised by Nadasurabhi of Koramangala at the Indian Heritage Academy Hall. You cannot really classify it as a chamber concert although the Hall is quite small.

The concert was truly outstanding. The duration of the concert was about 3 hours. How the time passed by?
Sanjay excelled in the delineation of all the Raagams (Chakravakam, Kedara Goulai, Thodi and Varamu). The svarams were just enough and right. Sense of proportion is extremely important and Sanjay is a role model that youngsters and upcoming music students should learn from. The breath control display was exemplary. In Thodi he stood in panchamam for almost a minute and ended the phrase with an exquisite sancharam (Typically most artistes taper off at the end gasping for breath). Only an artiste of his caliber can do that. The selection of compositions was also very good. Hats off to his vidwat.

The solo turns by Venkataraman (Varamu needs special mention) were appealing and keeping up with the mood that Sanjay had built. The RTP responses were very good and the interactions between Sanjay and Venkataraman made it thoroughly enjoyable. Young Ravishankar's following was very apt. The morching artiste (Rajashekar) was more active during the thani avarthanam. The tani avarthanam was very good.

The concert as mentioned in the heading by s_hari was only a private concert and I think it was for invited audience. I missed Sri TN Krishnan's concert and got to know Sanjay's concert through a friend. The same organiser conducts concerts in bigger auditoriums and gives enough publicity for those.

Finally much has been discussed about Smt Neela Ramagopal in this thread. My sister used to learn from her and she has done a yeomen service to the field of carnatic music by teaching many students. She has been in the field for many decades and is a very versatile performer.

This is my first write up in rasikas. Hopefully I will be able to participate more for upcoming concerts (Gayana Samaj is having their annual conference coming up...Anyone having the list please share)

Thanks for all your reports....would have loved to attend too...but I can understand the concerns of the sponsors. It is a judgment call and I guess it can go wrong at times. In any case I am in distant Dhaka so it is just as well....

Interesting that GV already knew of Sanjay's RTP...the CM world is so small!
