The Hyderabad Brothers presented a solid and varied fare yesterday, singing several rare ragas and krithis I've never heard before in my life. All the alapanais were executed very well and were very concise. The entire Chandrajyothi rendition was very good, as was the main. Harikamboji vocal alapana spanned nearly 15 minutes, and neraval was performed in two speeds. Swaras very quite interesting. The RTP was way too short to make much of an impact and the thanam was rather alapanai-ish and lacklustre. However, the elaborate Shuddha Dhanyasi alapanai at the end of the concert was very nicely done and the krithi rendition was excellent. The brothers have strong, resonant voices which can traverse all the octaves with ease, and have carved out a special niche in manufacturing clinically precise alapanais with rare phrases and in their excellent pronunciation and krithi rendition. On this night, I only wished the fairer of the brothers (the bespectacled one) was given more of an opportunity at manodharmam, since he was only playing the role of an accompanist by and large, and his voice was completely drowned out by the other dominant vocalist.
The violinist proved a good match to the vocalists and had no problems providing razor sharp responses to them. His accompaniment was always soft and supportive, but I do wish he had emerged a little out of his shadow to play a bit more when his turns came.
The percussion department (from Singapore) was fairly good. The mrudangam player, I thought, was a bit too vigorous and strokeful in his accompaniment, and it didn't seem to gel all that well with the brothers' singing style. The kanjira player was okay and both of them played a rather nice thani.

Well said Bilahari. Most of my feelings on the concert have been written by you. I was a little disappointed in the sense they were not at their best yday. The RTP was really too short and we hardly felt it was one. And yes the one brother was truly an accompanist who sang when he was asked to and kept quiet when the other one took over. Chandrajyothi was very nice as well as Abhogi - one of my favourite songs andHarikambhoji.
Same views on the violin n mridangam!
A good concert but could have been much more elaborate n better!
Bilahari- I did see you at the concert and hope to catch you on teh way out but guess i missed you when coming out.
Btw Alapana who hosted yday's concert is an organisation run by Mrs Bhanumathy Raghuraman and Mr Raghuraman.Bhanumathy is the daughter of the great Dr S.Ramanathan. They have this yearly concert in memory of Dr S Ramanathan
