After the performance of the participants she offers excellent comment on chaste malayalam. Does she belong to kerala or she has learnt malayalam?

there is another such artist brought up in Kochi,Sangeetha Sivakumar. She too speaks malayalam fluently.
there are plenty of artists connected with Kochi:
T.N.Krishnan,T.K.Govinda Rao,T.V.Gopalakrishnan,K.V.Prasad,Thrippunithura Radhakrishnan are some of them

Saw at 7.30am or so PST This show may be airing every Tuesday and you should get more details from the Kairali TV official website. I felt good about some of her qualities as judge; very conservative and a good positive reinforcer. Her malayalam accent is like a malayalam pattar.

Did any one notice our own unnikrishnan as a judge in another malayalam channel - asianet for their idea star singer? i felt that unni is not upto the standard of speaking chaste malayalam... ( by the way is unni from Kerala by any coincidence ?).he often turns to english....but shareth, the ace music director is strong in tamizh.....!!!!

The program 'Ellarum Padanu' with Sowmya as one of the judges is telecast on kairali channel every weekday (monday thru friday) at 7.30 pm IST. Happened to chat with Sowmya after one of her recent concerts... complimented her on the chaste Malayalam she speaks on air. She said her mother's side of the family is from Trichur and also, she grew up in Udyogamandal as Radhakrishnan mentioned (FACT campus, where her father was employed) until the age of 11, when she moved to Chennai and became a full-time disciple of Dr. SR. She said she makes a dedicated effort not to slip into Tamil, while speaking Malayalam although she is not familiar with some of the idioms. Apparently her colleague 'Carnatica' Ramanathan (who posts here), a Trivandrum native has been coaching her!

saadhyaa, yes I saw unni on asianet and was kind of surprised at his halting Malayalam, esp becoz he's a true-blue Mallu, much more so than Sowmya. The guy Sharath talks too much nonsense, IMO.

Unnikrishnan grew up in Chennai. His family has lived there for a few generations, I think.

Trissur brings great memories of Pooram, Bhajnotsavam, Thiruvambbadi/pArmekkavu/Vadakkanathan temples, poora parambbu, swaraj round, etc.

Such a nice piece.
Of course, the offer for playing a mother's role in this young woman's case is not surprising. They are film folks and she is smart and that's why she is all the things that she is. And yes, that's why she chose CM and stays with it. Meanwhile, there will be a crop of young actresses who would have careers lasting for the duration of the shooting one film whereas Sowmya's life as a CM singer will go on until she is really a grand dame of CM of ripe old age :)

from a few encounters that i have had with sowmya, i think she would have done justice to whatever career she had chosen. but glad she picked carnatic music!
she is so expressive in her singing and while she talks, not to mention that she is good-looking as well and so she would have made a good actress too :)

VKR, thanks for that lovely walk down memory lane. You can add Pathans and Natavarambu to that?

I lived their for 16 years until I completed my Highschool in CMS 1960. Thank you for additing pathans and natavarambu. We should include Ramavarma /Jose theatre and Dr. Banerji Club (for tennis) too; that should take us around the swaraj round.

Good to hear all those landmarks are still there...I heard Current bookstores is no more? And what about Indian coffee house? And Mani's cafe next to Rama varma?
Interesting tidbit about Thrissur:
"Swaraj Round Also known as Thrissur Round, which is at the heart of the city, is the largest ring road in India around a ground"

Nice to see all the talk on Kerala. Had not seen this thread. Incidentally I also grew up in FACT Township . Sowmya and me were childhood friends. She used to sing so well even then but we hardly realised the full implication of what it meant. Recently when we caught up we took a trip down memory lane....it was such fun and nostalgic.

jananee - good to know that you and Sowmya are childhood friends. Can you ask Sowmya to share with the Rasikas some of her bio including what keeps her motivated in propagating CM, her favorite raagas and songs. Rasikas will be very glad to hear from you and her.

SGovindaswamy: If your intention is not cynical, you could have written to Sowmya directly and she takes constructive observation very positvely. Just google "Sowmya" you will get her official website.

Yes that is right.. It would have been better to contact and get clarification. Her details are

http://carnatica.net/sowmya/contact.htm

In the same site, you will see how she has politely made her point on an issue relating to her singing during last December season and raised in a Hindu article. You can see that rather than taking it personally, she has simply elaborated and has explained what she sang backing up with appropriate facts

I also saw the programmes in which Sowmya was a judge. To say the least, her mannerisms wrfeaked of arrogance and one of condescending. In one scene, she was supposed to grade the singer on a scale of 1-10 and she said " che". Che is obviously six in Hindi. Then she said" sorry aaru" to mean the same in malayalam. Her efforst were either (1) to act as though she was a North Indian or (2) to convey an impressions that she also sits as judge in hundreds of North Indian competetions.
The greatest pity is some one thought it worth while to start a thread of this stupid thing.
