I am so excited about posting this thread. This long week end at Sydney witnessed great performances by stars in the carnatic world. Aruna Sairam's recital mesmerised the crowd where she sang a lot of songs in Tamil was really moving
She even sang a lot of songs apart from a ragam tanam pallavi in Shanmukhapriya on Murugan. Ofcourse her last few songs were her alltime favourite kalinga nartana tillana, Maadu mekkum of otthukkaadu and her kurai onrum ille was even more soulful than the version rendered by Sudha Raghunathan the previous day. Sudha sang a great Kharaharapriya followed by Pakkala. Her rendition of Sri Venkata Girisam was very appealing. The Saturday also witnessed an exciting concert to a packed auditorium by Ganesh Kumaresh. IMannarkudi Easwaran played very well on the miruthangam. however missed Bhushani Kalyanaraman and V.K.Manimaran's concert and the Pancaratnam in the morning. The last concert on Saturday was by TMK who rendered a very moving Nattaikurinji- ekkalathilum and Kalyani was brilliant.
Varadarajan on the violin and Srimushnam Raja Rao took the concert to great heights. Sunday morning had some local artistes performances followed by a flute concert by Vijay Venugopal whose concert was mediocre. That was followed by a great concert by the carnatica bros who were a dynamic combination. Their rendition of Marivere and the niraval and swaram in malayamarudham manasaedulo were excellent. But the highlight of the concert was a ragam and tanam in mohanam rendered together and not one after the other. One brother goes really low and the other to the high sa. They did graha bhedam also and the song kapali was rendered very well. The next concert was by Unnikrishnan who began a bit shakily but then rendered a very good alapana for vachaspati. But the highlight was his todi. Karthikeya
The alapana and kalpanaswaram were very good. Again Varadarajan excelled. This was followed by Aruna's special concert. She is performing this weekend at Melbourne. Sorry, for any mistakes in my post since I am not technically competent. I also did not note down all the songs.

I attended most of the concerts and thought that the highlight concert was Unnikrishnan's who could pack weighty renditions of Vachaspati, Kalyana Vasantam and Thodi into 2 hours. Of course, all the programs had good noteable portions. I was unable to sit through all the concerts and take notes, etc since i was sharing baby sitting responsibilities! The main program concluded with a dance recital by Srekala Bharat.
The was a fun debate on Monday featuring some of the artistes discussing the topics "Carnatic music is for the connoisseurs".
S_hari: TMK performed as part of the festival.

I really enjoyed the Sydney Music festival a lot...was a rare opportunity to see some really great singers in action. I really liked Unnikrishnan's thodi piece. And it was great he explained what raga he was singing, as I would never have known some of the ragas otherwise.
TMK's was awesome too, and I especially loved the kutti song Varugalamo in Manji...it was so sad and beautiful! I have downloaded and been listening to the version by KV Narayanswamy ever since! It's very good too...but nothing like hearing it sung live by a great artiste like TMK.
I liked Manikiran's concert very much and his style of singing reminded me very much of Nedunuri Krishnamurthy, I wonder why? This was the first time I ever listened to him sing...and I think I def liked what I hear!
The percussionists were very fun to watch and I thought Varadarajan's violin playing was pretty cool!
I didn't go for the local concerts on Sunday, but the ones on Saturday were not too good...I was a bit disappointed...However the pancharatna krithi singing on Saturday morning was a lot of fun to hear... Unfortunately i missed the carnatica brothers concert which is a real pity...feel like kicking myself now!
The debate on Monday was very funny..though it veered off course pretty often. But i think everyone who attended had a good laugh..
Mannargudi Easwaran and Raja Rao really cracked me up with their quips and funny gestures! I never knew carnatic musicians could be so funny...Raja Rao's imitation of a 'rowdy' was sooo funny...
A lot of CDs were on sale too with a great variety of artistes including T Brinda and Parasala Ponnammal.
My only complaint would be that I didn't hear many dikshitar krithis througout the 2 days....The only one I can remember was vatapi ganapathim. it was my understanding that this was just a carnatic music festival rather than a thyagaraja utsavam. But the artistes seemed to have a different idea, one of them actually called it a Thyagaraja Utsavam. Perhaps I am missing something.
Btw does anyone know if a dvd of the concert will be relseased? i noticed that it was being filmed. it would be great if Swaralaya could release a DVD.
Hope the Sydney Festival becomes a greater affair in the coming years...Then we in OZ will not have to feel sad at missing our fav musicians!

Once again Jaya tv has proved that it is the channel genuinely interested in carnatic music , little caring for the so called RTP(I think ,I m correct)ratings. It is a distressing fact that carnatic music is not popular with Tv viewers we , the carnatic music lovers are very thankful to you Jaya Tv gobilalitha

4. 17/07/2008,Thursday-Aruna Sairam- Vocal
a. Tamil Song in Kadanakuthuhala
This song looked very similar to the popular "raghuvamsha sudhAnbudhi". chiTaswaram looked almost same. It appeared ,the lyrics has also been woven to chiTaswaram which was also presented. The vocalist pointed out that this Composition is by Pallavi Venkatama Rama Iyer.
b. Tamil Pashuram sung in rAga Malika starting with a lovely Kambodhi.
Aruna Sairam's FULL THROATED singing brought out all the emotions/nuances of Kambodhi including higher octave sancharas.
This was followed by the famous " kuRai onRum illai " Tamil song.
c. Aruna Sairam' s speciality has been singing( marAthi ? )Abhang's on Vittala.
She sang very emotionally " bhaktha jana vatsala " and the audience were spellbound.

Dr. Manjunath,
Here you go:

We discussed this earlier. The bonus is the link to the incredible article written by Sri Gopalakrishna Gandhi (a worthy scion of the Gandhi-Rajaji families)

Ravi,
Manjunath said it--good to be in your company, but our being a 'dynamic duo' is debatable--you play your part Robin, but even though he has made it again to the movie houses in a new version, Batman (woman) is long in the tooth
Manjunath,
Ravi is a solo act. There are others who chip in too. Rajani, and of late Punarvasu and several other occasional translators. And don't forget the telugu and kannaDA , sanskrit and hindi ones!
And of course, Lakshman...

Hi
This morning heard Bhushani Kalyanaraman-Jaya TV relay of Sydney festival. The two songs was not in her calibre range especially "Ragasudha rasa" being a popular kriti(Andolika) and a special one from GNB stable was very ordinary. She must have warmed up later. Not aware.Accompaniments boosted her in the two songs.Probably her voice must have let her down.

True. This song was OK. It may be too much to expect GNB's quality.carnaticdasan wrote:Hi

First song Sri Mahaganapthi in Gowlai was nicely rendered with good sancharas in Swara patterns.

Yes, it is the same for me too; I too have learnt a from all of you and taking part in various discussions has helped me to recollect whatever I had learnt long back and which I felt I had forgotten. It is so stimulating and I am very happy.rshankar wrote:Arasi, Manjunath,
For me it is a learning experience. I have learnt so much from the likes of Arasi, Rajani, Punarvasu and others. Vidya's interprettation of 'kuppai' and the Sri Nagarajan's new slant are what make it so enjoyable for me.

Today i was fortunate to listen to Priya Sisters in Jaya TV relaying Sydney feet. Both Kumudakriya and Syama kritis were excellently rendered. Both sisters rendering the kritis have lot of balance and bring about the essence of the kritis. Both excel in this area more than the swarams and the alapanais. It was "GOOD" MORNING.

I think Kadri Gopalnath rendered one other song, but I forgot which one it is. Priya Sisters sang Gopalakrishna Bharathi's Ayye Methakadinam and Thillai Sthalam Endru, and one other song.vs_manjunath wrote:OS Arun & party- Vocal on 22/7/08
