Hi all

As promised, I am pasting the link to my ongoing articles in the Express for those who do not subscribe to it/are abroad. This is the first of a series of articles on issues pertinent to classical music, starting with Ravikiran.

Hope you all like the piece. (BTW - the visual is a bit bizarre - I guess it is a web image goof up!!)

I just read the article in the newspaper, as I ate my lunch.

You left nearly all the talking to him! Excellent decision, and one many interviewers can learn from :)

Thanks: a good article. He comes across as a real heavy-weight, it would be good to hear more --- pity the editor didn't give you more space.

Anil, good job.

> "someone who identified 325 ragas and 175 talas when he was just two years old? "

Quite amazing. You mentioned about a recording of him as a child identifying the ragas as his father played them. What was his age at the time of that recording? Not that I can relate to such a gifted mind, in addition to that inborn musical ability to latch on to melodies and rhtythms ( which is the main thing ), at another level it is also amazing that at such a young age he could keep track of details like the long list of raga names and tala names.

Anil,
A very nice one. Wish it were a bit longer (given the subject matter). And the photograph was a disappointment!
It is always interesting and encouraging when you hear that musicians interact off stage too. We as rasikAs benefit when imaginative minds come up with more ideas in the process. The way you learn from each other helps you musicians and music too.
In the glorious days of yore, while a simpler way of life brought musicians together, there was also envy and snobbery in the music community with exceptions of a few large-hearted souls...

Srkris,
Great pictures! What an artiste! If the child was a marvel, the mature musician (composer etc etc) is a joy to listen to. At his best, he seems to strike you as if he is the embodiment of the essence of a few generations, all wrapped up in this one person.
The biscuit tins in front of him reminded me of the anecdote our family friend who is in her eighties related to me recently--how the child would happily eat a few biscuits and do his wunderkid routine. When his father brought him to their house, the child asked if he could play with a toy they had in the house and held on to it throughout the music session!

I think I saw him as kid identifying ragas in the 'Krishna Gana Sabha'-it was during the 'Gokulashtami Series I think- because after identifying every raga, he was asking for a seedai!
Nice interview and nice pictures.

Arasi...unfortunately I have a space restriction otherwise I would have loved it to be longer.

As I have mentioned earlier on the forum, my Express contributions are regularly uploaded on madraspianist.blogspot.com -

Saravanan, thank you for the compliment :).. I regularly write about music and musicians in the Express - on Sundays. Since the Sunday Express reaches nationwide, I am glad that our musicians and traditions are reaching a wider audience (outside of the concert stage, and thanks to online expositions, an even wider base).

Music is indeed magic in motion and I am glad to be able to add my two-bit contribution to the magic of CM. Please do check out the blogspot on a regular basis, as I tend to travel on performances as well, and may not always be active on the forum.

Anil,

The interview though short was wonderful. That as a 2 year old child, Ravikiran could do something so unique is really "unexplainable" . I had quoted Pandit Ravishankar somewhere else on this forum on another thread, who after seeing the child Ravikiran identify so many Talas and Ragas, exclaimed in awe "If you dont believe in God, just look at Ravikiran" !!
