is t.r.mahalingam the flautist and t.r.mahalingam different? flute mali was born in 1926 and actor mali was born in 1923,according to their biography.So flute mali was a controversial and enigmatic personality.Music critic SVK wrote that mali's signature song was the gamaka-laced, brika filled 'NAVARASAKANNADA' 'NINNU VINA NAMADI ENDU'.SVK calls it as an everest of a song of MALI.Is it true?

That is a great and rare recording cool used for this occasion.

And that SSI is a hard task master, isn't he? In MSS's own recording of this song, the niravals are done quite differently much to her credit though SSI style of singing the nirval for this song is much weightier. Melody wise, the start of the anupallavi is one of the best out there, no matter what genre.

so SRkRIS 's favourate is bhairavi.'upacharamulanu chekonavayya' of tyagaraja which starts in tarasthayi swara [gandhara i think] and 'nee padamule' of patnam subramanmya iyer which also starts in high-pitched nishadam are a treat to all senses. It is a swarakshara 'eduppu' 'ni-pa-da-ma' in patnam's claassy bhairavi. I heard a version of this patnam's song sung by the incomparable classicist'D.K.P'amma accompanied by veeraraghavan as usual on violin, D.K.J as vocal support. the niraval was sung for the line of pallavi itself 'ni padamule'. i think 'geeta casettees' has released the recording. the composition of tyagabrahmam that i mentioned at beginning forms a part of 'utsava sampradayakritis' .in this song the saint offers a royal umbrella, a chamaram to the lord.

To me, her nereval at 'sundarESa suguNa bRnda daSaratha nandana aravinda nayana pAvanA' distills the twin essences of bhairavI and bhaktI.

There is a version of this song by Musiri in the all india radio collection 'ni padamule' of patnam.Of course ,there is that magnanopus of dikshitar' balagopala' in bhairavi. Actually i have heard a detailed study of this raga in 'kairali tV' program called 'ragolsavam' literally 'celebration of ragas' in english, where Vidushi suguna varadachari beautifully explained the subtle nuances of BHAIRAVI like swara oscillations and the primacy of Rishabha gandhara in enhancing the beauty of this raga.Guruvayyor dorai said in this program about Chembai's swarakalpana in'Maruthe maamava'. it had famous malayalam film singer-music director jayachandran as host. now i dont know whether the progrm is stiil being featured.But it was treat to music students and lovers alike. we dont get that channel now

vasnthakokilam! the name conjures up a lot of memories for me .I've watched 'haridas' in which vasantha amma was playing role of Tyagaraja bhagavatar.Her voice is so sonorous and majestic. in fact i've heard and savoured her 'Asaikonden anbe' in kalyani.my father likes her alaap in chranam which is like shower of coral lilles in moonlight.her HAMSANANDI alaapana preluding my favourate song'ANda naal ini varumo' where she touhes tara shadja is a moment of absolute bliss. 'Nitthirayil vandu nenjil idam konda utaman yaro di' her gamakas for the line 'thozhi' are scintillating.

Ravi, 100% agree with what you say. I absolutely love MSS's rendering of that song in its entirety including the niraval. What you say is quite true. My weighty characterization was at an orthogonal and technical level. As you say that is subjective and it is also questionable if that technical prowess translates to musical aesthetics ( subjective, definitely ). It is interesting and also good to see how the renderings are quite different though MSS probably learnt the song from SSI.

neelotpal. Your writings about songs and ragas are quite informative. It looks as if you have been listening to CM for 50+ years.

Vasantakokilam avargale! i take it as a compliment from you but indeed iam fortunate to be exposed to old recordings courtesy my aunt who is a good veena player{a diploma holder indeed] and my own klevi gnanam though i learnt CM till some kritis.My friends in hyderabad use to say that i have a attractive gamaka producing 'saareeram'. By the way it only depends on your thirst for knowing more.Did your hear the song'varuvaano vanakuyile nadarajan' of NCV? it is another favourate of mine.

'ARASI' iam sorry ! it was as wife of tyagaraja bagavatar.There is a song where she bemoans her fate to lose her husband to a dancer.it was as usual a powerful rendition,yet pathos-filled.

Yes, it was a compliment. Your knowledge at a young age is quite impressive. Since you also have a good voice, you should continue learning.

Thank you Vasantakokilam avargale.I heard a divine 'BHAIRAVI' alapanai by the inimitable MS amma on 'sangeetamshare.org/murthy http' today which moved me to tears. the raga bhava is so touching ,though MS amma did'nt plunge into 'tarasthayi shadja' in this alapanai.It was surprising as she is known to use her voice to its full effect. The song was 'Koluvaiyunnade' which tyagaraja composed in 'Tana style',perhaps MS amma wanted to savour the Bhakti bhava in the song as she is a bhaktivotary and as a musician though she was second to none in technical expertise,she did'nt venture into technvcal manouvers

I am also a new memberand would like to share my experiences in carnatic music.I would take this opportunity to invite all Mumbai rasikas to a vocal recital by Aditya Venkatesh on 14th June 08 at Vashi Fine Arts,6-30pm(Jullelal mandir) and on 15th June at Rasika Ranjani sabha(Swami Narayanan mandir,Ghatkopar.

Hey rasikas,

Music is such a lively thing isn't it. To me it is a charger indeed. Especially MS amma's songs, they just lift our spirits. Love S.Sowmya's & Bombay Jayashree's voice as well. Sowmya's Krishna dharshanam is my all time favourites.

Hi all,

I am a carnatic music lover and a long time carnatic music listener. I am self taught on the guitar for the past year and play carnatic music on it. I started out playing melodies in general but given my penchant towards carnatic, I slowly built up proficiency in playing it on the guitar. I am slowly expanding my knowledge of Carnatic music over the last few years. Within my limited listening (when compared to the eclectic members of this group), my favourite composers are probably Thyagaraja, Mysore Vasudevachar and Oothukadu Venkata Subbayyar. My inspiration to learn carnatic music was my sister, a long time disciple and rasika of CM. I have been lurking around Rasikas.org as a member for a while, and I have found most of the discussions here to be of high quality. Its good to see informed exchanges by the members of this community. I hope this is just the beginning of my association with Rasikas.org and I hope to learn a lot and also help out here and there!

Keep up the great work on these forums, this is an invaluable resource for educating ourselves about our musical heritage, not to mention the fact that these discussions serve to improve us all by sensitizing and sharpening our intellects as music always does. I also hope to see the Carnatic Wiki grow, and hope to help in building that up over the coming months.

Can I make a humble suggestion. Since you say you live in Hyderabad how hard could it be to learn Telugu, a wonderful language in many ways. I am a tamil iyer with no knowledge of Telugu by the way. I regret I didn't care enough to learn the language when I was growing up in T Nagar in Chennai , a suburb with significant Telugu population. If the '1941' in your name stands for the year of your birth, let me assure you age is never a barrier to learning. I am sorry if I said something you don't want to hear.
