Malladi Brothers gave a wonderful concert in a jam packed Sastri hall on the occasion of Tanjore Upendran Memorial day. They were accompanied by M. A. Sundersan, Umayalpuram Sri Sivaraman and B.S. Purushottaman. it was fitting that the concert was organised amongst others by Sri Neyveli Narayanan who was earlier a student of the late maestro Sri Upendran, and who is now under the tutelage of the redoutable Sri Sivaraman. Here are the details
Varnam Kambodhi (they sang the full saahityam in the charanam)
Deva Deva Maayamalagowla (s)
Seetha vara Devagandhari (r,s)
Kandajoodumi Vachaspathi (r,n,s)
Amba Nilambari -Nilambari
Sri Ramam -Narayana Gowlai
Emijesite-Thodi (r,n,s,t)
Idadupadam-Kamas
Slokam followed by
nagavulu nijamani nammEda - yamunA kalyANi
Vaddaninne -Kaapi
Tillana-Chenchuruti
Pathikihaara-Surati
Mangalam
It was a vibrant concert, before a house full appreciative audience. The alapanas of Vachaspathi and Thodi were excellent and Sri MAS on violin was splendid in his replies. A few weeks ago at KGS , Sri Sivaraman had remarked on the "youthfulness " of Sri. R.K. Srikantan at his concert. Today Sri Sivaraman had listeners gasping at the energy and passion and brilliance with which he embellished the concert, topped by a cracker of a thani in the company of an admiring B. S. Purushottaman.
All in all a very enjoyable evening!

Th introductory speech about Shri Upendran was given by veteran Sikkil Shri Bhaskaran.
Grand concert indeed it was from the word go. The varnam was full of vigour. Swarams for deva deva were sung (and quite appropirately so) at bhuvana traya nAyakA instead of at jAtarupa. Devagandhari was sung very well and Shri MAS played some not-so-commonly heard prayogams in his reply. Vacaspathi alapanai was very scholarly and aesthetically presented. A special mention must be made of the neraval done at alanAdu. Shri MAS was simply brilliant throughout and added energy to the already charged atmosphere. Neraval & swarams for Todi were sung at guruvu tAnaitE nEmI, at 3 matra eduppu. The korappu was initially done for samam and at Shri UKS's request, they sang it for the eduppu. Tani was very enjoyable with Shri UKS leading from the front and Shri BSP following him faithfully. The final korvai was simple yet elegant.
Overall, one of the best concerts I have attended in recent times.
