The reason why I remember is....

Gayathri Venkataraghavan – Vocal
V.Sanjeev – Violin
Erode Nagaraj – Mrudangam

2. sidhdhi vinAyakam – chAmaram – rUpaka chApu – dhIkshithar
3. dhinamaNi vamsa – hari kAmbOji – Adhi – thyAgarAjar
4. sogasugA –shrI ranjani – rUpaka chApu – thyAgarAjar
5. chandhrasEkara – mOhanam – Adhi –Andavan pichai

8. ninnE nammi nAnu – thOdi – misra chApu - shyAmA sAsthri
9. vizhikku thuNai - viruththam – bEhAg
10. muruganin – bEhAg – kaNda chApu – surajAnandhA

13. mangaLam – sourAshtram –Adhi - thyAgarAjar

While sanjeev and erode have two Es each, Gaya'thri' scored ‘eee’. It was Elegant, Energetic and Enriching. Even, normal sangathis sounded enriched in her rendition. Her music was packed with emotion and she presented it in an energetic way. The soothing sustains followed by kArvais and sancharAs spoke much for the endurance in her voice and creativity as well.

The varNam reminded me the thematic concert that I played in raga sudha many years ago. Gayathri – Amrutha Murali and Shankari rendered SS’s krithis and AS mama was present that day.

The song on vinAyaka, in medium tempo tuned the ears towards a concentrated listening and she sang swaras for sidhdhi vinAyakam(samam) and also for prasidhdha gaNa nAyakam (3 aksharAs from veechu).

‘hari’-kAmbOji in ‘sankarAlayam’ was interesting. when kAmbOji is said to be a pleasing and apt rAgA for shivA, thyAgarAjA has praised rAma in ‘hari’ kAmbOji ! Though the krithi in this rAgam is about rAma, if not properly sung, the rAgam may easily lead to kamAs and land one in trauma!

She sang a nice Alapana and swaram in two kAlams.

sogasugA, in a slow speed provided a great vishranthi and she rendered a slOka and song on mahA periyavA in mOhanam after dhinamaNi vamsa. I would like to call it as mO’ga’nam as the stay in thAra sthAyi gAndhAram was excellent.

dhEvi brOva is one of my all time favourites. chinthAmaNi, the janya of 56th mELa, shanmukapriya stole the hearts. :)

Padhavini created a wave of enthu among everyone. That was followed by an AlApanA in thOdi for 10 minutes. It was a full picture, ornamented with varieties of sangathis. At times, she sprinkled the nAdhaswara ‘pidi’s with clear brugAs. The AlApanai reached a place to stay and play in thArasthAyi shadjam. She slowly progressed to rI and gA and the prayOgam in mA and pA were gentle. On the way back, she reached manthra sthAyi madhyamam and also did very good madhyama kAla phrases in keezh sthAyi, which added weight to the presentation.

A cooker whistled for five times from nearby house during (due-ring?) the AlApana of Gayathri and Sanjeev. The rice would have reflected the relaxed manas of rasikas! [reNdumE kuzhaindhu pOnadhO…]

ninnE nammi nAnu was main. The singing of the krithi, the niraval in the 3rd charaNam, “kAmAkshi kanchadhaLAya thAkshiâ€

Two Rs from one E--Ringside (AKA on stage) Review from Nagaraj.
Arasi's old computer has problems with the text. All she sees is question marks. Sigh...

erode14,
Here it is.
The reason why I remember is....
(erode14- sorry I am unable to translate-'thuLLalOdu-a load of thuLLal and 'pugunda' veedu'
When I leaarnt that I have a cutcheri in Perambur Sangeetha Sabha, my heart waited with a load of enthusiasm. I came to chennai towards the end of August '89-the reason why I remember is-the day after I landed, there was the programme on DD National channel-'Laya Vinyasam'.of Shri UKS. Till I shifted to Valasaravakkam in mid-98', Perarmbur was my home.

Now, when I went from Mambalam, it was a loooong expedition- that too-me, in my three wheeler- Kinetic Honda- with a friend on the pillion and a wheel chair behind- as if going on an expedition to Antartica, and I reached Sankaralayam.

Thank you.... :)

Arasi, its alright.... writing in thamizh is what i do always and its unstoppable...... some of my poems have appeared in kaNayAzhi....

Punarvasu, that was great job by you.... thank you..

rajeshnat, perumbur sangeetha sabha is a prAchIna sabha... shrI sethurama iyer served as secretary for many years...

i would like to share one interesting anecdote, that I heard in 1992 when iyengArvAL's day was celebrated by the sabha...

shrI ariyakudi, used to sing in the sabha those days and when the secretary approached a popular vidhvAn for a concert, he just demanded one thing. " I shall sing, but, you should give what you give to iyangArvAL.... Sethurama iyer accepted and the concert happened.

after concert, he did a namaskAram to that vidhvAn and said, "this is what we do for iyangArvAL, whenever he sings..."

thank you tkb,

srikrish, thank you and it was late-end too when reached tail-end.....
(when i posted it) :D

I have heard veena Gayathri in Perambur Sangeetha Sabha-either it was her debut concert or the second one-she was 'Baby Gayathri' a young girl in 'pAvAdai-blouse' if I remember right. We knew then and there that she was going to be great.

Nagaraj,
And we did not know you were a poet! Published in kaNaiyAzhi too! Puts us Asukavis to shame (kaNaiyAzhi is a serious literary publication). Some years ago, got a good review from the magazine for my novel, I heard. Haven't seen it to this day! One of the many disadvantages of living away from the scene, I suppose...

I was very happy to hear the name Perambur Sangitha Sabha in a nostalgic fashion as well for the fact that like Hindu High School in Triplicane it has been Venues for MANY MOST MEMORABLE concertts of Flute Mali, Madurai Mani Iyer etc. We all owe a great debt of gratitude to late Sri. Sethuraman who was responsible for presenting these GREATS among others; Actually the concerts used to end around 10:30-11 P.M. & close to 100 persons used to walk all the way to Triplicane& Mylapore afterwards discussing the finer points & innovations in that particular concert. Some one should arrange a meeting & request Tiruvanmaiyur Asthika Samajam secy Sri. V.Narasimhan & "Nadopasana" Srinivasan to describe those times. I am grateful to both of them for STILL conducting their Sabhas in the same spirit. vkv

I also attended the concert.

1) This concert was performed in Shankaralyam in Perambur. Before the concert started, there was Karppora Aarthi and at the end, Mangala Aarthi to THE DEITY, KAMAKSHI, which, indeed, looked very nice.

2) Though I have seen Erode accompanying Satur Sisters and others, first time, I know he is THIS ERODE who is contributing in this forum. Nice to see you. Hope to have few words in our next meet !.

3) Muruganin MaRu Peryar- Tanjore Shankara Iyer
GangE- Mysore vasudavacharyar
Corrct me, if Iam wrong.

4) V.Sangeev, being the disciple of A.Kanyakumari and Gaaythri was the disciple of Sri.A.Sundaresan and the latter was the disciple of Sri.SSI- Padavini and Dinamani Vamsa were "no wonders" from Gayathri.

5) The sad part is, though Harikamodhi raagam was good, she missed "Dheena Charanya" in the Pallavi Line (Wonder how Erode missed it). Some one countered, subsequent, to the concert that it was the "paadam", I was wondering how come "a Paadam" could miss a "word" of Thyagaraja..

6) SogasuGa (Sriranjini) was the master piece of Satur AGS. His neraval in "Navarasa" is a class. (it is uploaded in S;priy). Gayathri tried the same here and she messed up completely. She could not withstand the neraval for more than 2 min and jumped in to Swaram. I was, actually, praying for safelanding of that filight (song). She missed "taalam" couple of times. I think she must have prepared on that day, as a tribute, to Satur and could not give full justification.

7) Todi was very good and the rest of the songs too. Gayathri's voice, was full of bhakthi and bhava and her voice control was also excellant. It was a good selection (of the artiste) by Satur Sisters, giving tribute to their father.

Perambur Sangeetha Sabha is very near to Perambur Railway STation on the Northern Side. Many people know this location in the nearby places. Once u cross the subway of the perambur railway station you have to proceed near the railway station entrance and you can enquire about shankaralayam. Many will tell you. I know it is really an ordeal to reach far off places like Perambur, Ambattur OT, Tambaram, Selaiyur, Pammal, Pozhichalur etc., etc. But as artistes and rasikas one must appreciate the efforts of such people in remote places in conducting concerts for many years amidst ordeals.

Thanks balAji. I do know this and egmore sabha are one of the oldest sabhas. Certainly nice to hear that lot of sabhas are coming up at southern suburbs. I remember few years back when I had gone to nanganallur to hear sudha's concert , I just could not get in it was jampacked crowd there.

definitely as vkv sir told, sri.narasimhan is the man for all those beautiful old stories and anectodes about our glorius past masters and their memorable concerts.... i have heard him telling lots of stories,,, among which he told about a semmangudi mama concert at perambur sangeetha sabha with a young uks sir ,, the concert it seems took place the day before uks sir was to take up his law exams...

he is still reminiscent about the thani played by uks sir for mArubalka that day... wonder whether it got reccorded by any chance.....

gr sastrigal,
A Sundaresan was NOT a disciple of SSI.
He learnt music from Kittamani Iyer, Raghava Rao, Ramnad Krishnan and Pattammal.
