Hit there,

I was wondering if anyone had the lyrics for Sri Venugopal Goswami's rendition of "Govinda Jai Jai" and "Meditation - Hare Murare" Could anyone who is familiar with these beautiful bhajans tell me what raga (if at all) they are based on? Thankyou

If you upload the songs on the net we can try to figure out the ragas.

I'm mainly interested with the lyrics and raga for Hare Murare and Govinda Jai Jai (tracks one and two) but would also love to know same for the others if you are up for the challenge....

Jai Sri Krsna

not sure about candaharam....
Ravi,
the composer of the bhajan is not mentioned in the book i have but, i think the composer is Sri Narayan das (i guessed it from the mudra)
this is actually Sri gopAlASTakam, it is very long... but the whole of it is not usually rendered.

Thankyou Rshankar and Lakshman and Krishnaa for your enthusiastic responses. I'm glad to hear you love these compositions. I have been captivated by the beauty of this whole album for months now and it will be good to now sing along with the correct words. Being an Australian not so good with sanskrit it is great to see the lyrics written down.
I look forward to further transcripts.

One raga down 5 to go.
The next step for me is to translate the meanings. I am familiar with some of the words because of my association with Krsna devotees but am always keen to learn more.

Jai Govinda!

Thankyou Krishnaa. Well done. I am compiling the translations and various information about each bhajan into easily read pages so they can be sung by myself and others. I am also attempting to learn them on sitar, to be accompanied by tabla and santoor.

I welcome your help and any further input.

Any takers on Hare Murare - it's very long I know.......

Laksman - I agree with you on meri nayya (which is titled Bansuri Wale) being Maru Bihag.

Mukunda,

Here is the meaning of the marubihAg (?) one:

mEri nayyA kinArE sE lagAdO bAnsurIvAlE
mEri sOtihuyI kismat jagAdO bAnsurIvAlE

Oh divine flautist (bAnsurIvAlE), please guide (lagAdO) this boat (nayyA) of mine (mEri)[1] safely to (sE) the shore (kinArE)! (And in doing so), please awaken/enliven (jagAdO) my destiny (kismat) that seems to be currently asleep (sOtI huyI)....

mukuT hO sIS par tErE murArI hath mein bansI
piyAjI sAth hO tErE daras dO bAnsurIvAlE.....

Oh flautist! Oh enemy (ari) of the demon mura (murAri = mura+ari)! Please reveal (daras dO) yourself to me with (hO) a crown (mukuT) atop (par) your (tErE) head (SIS, sIs, or sIS), a flute (bansI) in (mein) your hands (hAth), and the love of your life (piyAjI) beside you (sAth hO)[2]

na buddhI hai na bhaktI hai nA bhagvan kOi sAbal hai
mujhE AsrAkE bal tumhArA bAnsurIvAlE.....

I have not been (na) endowed with intellect (buddhi), and I have not (na) practiced devotion (bhakti hai). Nor (na) do I have the blessings of a God (bhagvAn). I do not have (hai) competence (sAbal) in anything (kOI). (Therefore,) Oh flautist, give me your (tumhArA) strength (bal) by accepting/protecting (AsrAkE) me (mujhE).

bahut ab khA cukI ThOkar bahut ab phir jhukI dardar
pakaD lO hAth mErAbhI murArI bAnsurIvAlE.....

I have run around aimlessly (khA cukI ThOkar) so much (bahut) by now (ab), my head now (ab) hangs low (jhuki) as I feel broken/crushed/anguished (dardar) after spinning around (phir) so much (bahut) to no end. So, please hold (pakaD lO) onto my (mErAbhI)[3] hand (hAth) - and guide me on a steady path to salvation, Oh murArI, bAnsurIvAlE!

sunA hai bhaktvatsal hO sadA bhaktOn kE rakshak hO
hamArI bhI madad karlnE kO AjA bAnsurIvAlE.....

For I seem to have heard (sunA hai) that you are (hO) very tender and loving (vatsal) towards your devotees (bhakta), and you are (hO) the protector (rakSak) of (kE) your devotees (bhaktOn) at all times (sadA)! So, please come (AjA) to (kO) help (madad karnE) me (hamArI) as well (bhI), Oh bAnsurIvAlE!

[1] The allusion here is: nayyA/boat - individual soul, stream - the ocean of life/bhasAgar, kinArA/shore - salvation/mOkSa

[2] In this context, piyAjI is rAdhA.

[3] The word bhI (as well) is used here to give the idea that the composer is pointing out to krishNa 'you lead others to salvation, so, why do you single me out, why not help me 'as well'?'
