YES it was an energetic performance by Sanjay.

The first item was a varnam in valaji by Lalgudi Jayaraman.
The sahana kriti was a new one. Kandamani aaduthu is a kriti of gopalakrishna bharathi i was told.. .on the whole it was a very good performance except for the fact we missed Sanjays RTP. Kumudakriya raga aalapana and swaram at aagamadi sannutam was excellent.

mAvalla kAdamma -composer chittoor subrahmanyapillai
Orumaiyudan is vallalar arutpa i think

Violin - S.Varadarajan
Mridangam - Tanjavur Ramadas
Kanjira - Gopalakrishnan.

The first item of Sanjay's concert was the varnam 'Chalamu seyanela' in Hindolam. A composition of Tiger.

Sorry it was a mistake reg. the varnam sung by Sanjay. I was told it was valaji by someone who had come at the commencement of the concert.

Can we just ban the book "Concert Guide" ("Kutcheri Kai-edu" in Tamil, "Kai-edu" supposedly being the translation for "Guide" :) )?

People who can't tell the difference between Valaji and Hindolam are referring to this book and writing on this website about the concert!

PS. I am fully aware that there are only seven notes in music and so for some people it is insufficient information to properly decode the ragam. :) I am also aware that Hindolam omits two of the five as does Valaji, providing even less information to the listener.

PPS. Before anyone pipes in, I am also aware that there are 12 notes when semitones are included. :D

PPPS. I am also aware that there are supposedly 22 sruthis in Carnatic music. :P

Agreed, harimau about hindOLam, but there is this saying: Anaikkum aDi Sarukkum (even the mighty elephant might trip). We have our mental blocks (the young among us too :) ) and meaning one rAgam, we say something else. Since I do not know much about many rAgAs, I tend to think that perhaps there IS another varNam starting with the same words in another rAgA. As someone who is learning something new every day from the forum, I wait to hear some expert confirming it. You could be one of those experts too :)
Yes, I have heard Sanjay sing the hindOLam one by Tiger.
