Sarasijanabha Ata tala varnam of Vadivelu/Svati Tirunal contains most of the important phrases of kambhoji. If you learn this varnam then it will help you a lot.

Common phrases include such DSRGMG, PDSRG MGPDS MGS, PD,MGPDS etc.

May I also suggest listening to kalpanaswaras of a long rendition - particularly one that is rendered in "slow speed".

I would also definitely suggest the audio medium as arun suggests as it's very difficult to
get an idea of the raga from just phrases written in text.

For instance, MGPDS is a common phrase, but the uccharana (accent and gamaka)
for each of the swaras M, G, P, D and S is very important to bring out kambhoji properly
and distinguish it from say, bilahari which can also have this phrase but with completely
different uccharana. Same for phrases like SRGM, PDMGPDS, MGGRSNDP, and so on.

I would also suggest listening to Shashikiran/Ganesh teaching the Kamalamba Navavarna
Kriti in Kambhoji at http://www.aradhana.org (follow links under sustaining sampradaya).
There he gives a clear picture of the raga including arohana-avarohana and characteristic
phrases, and the phrases are also repeated so might give you a clearer picture.

sri subramanyAya namasthe ( MD) rendered by various stalwarts ARI,SSI,MMI, GNB,DKP,KVN will definitely give a lot of insight. Most of them have made nereval & detailed swaraprastarams at different places of this great song.

evari mAta(T) by ARI
mAjAnaki(T) by MMI may also be quite helpful
sangeethapriya.org will have all these audio records.

There's also an RTP by Sri SSI available on sangeethapriya where has has extensively explored the lower reaches of kAmbhOji. This is very insighful and should be of help.

sri raghuvara apramEya mAmava(T) & o rangashAyi (T) may also be quite helpful.

An elaborate rendition of O rangaSAyI by Smt. MSS' was used to illustrate rAga appreciation in the HMV series on appreciating CM...and it remains one of the all-time fabulous versions of kAmbhOjI for me, raising goose-bumps from the AlApana on....:)

rs:This HMV record of Smt MSS was the concert in the Cornegie Hall, US . Three cassettes were released is it not ??

I remember this series has the following songs. Correct me, If i am wrong.
Vol I has shObiLu saptaswara, rAma rAma guna( simhEndra Madhyama) etc.,
Vol II has O rangaShAyi etc.,
Vol III - dEvi brova(chintamani),ikanaina(pushpalatika) etc

In addition to O rangashAyi, I love the ''ikanaina'' rendition very much.

Dr. Manjunath, I think you are correct. I have to check the original cassette to confirm.
