Perhaps it is time to break my 'ag~nAtavAsaM' with a very good news about our Rasika Member who is very active in promoting our Forum at Singapore. That is none other than Professor Mohan Balasubramaniam (known to us as 'Kamalamba'). Of course you may know him to be the Son of our dear member GBL (Gopilalitha).

He has been awarded a prestigious National Award viz., National Science & Technology Award (NSTA) 2008 by the Govt of Singapore. The details are here
http://rapidshare.com/files/139014955/N ... n.pdf.html

Hearty Congratulations Dear Kamalamba from all of us which we share with your Proud Father and Mother. As GBL says the news is a matter of pride for them as well as Music for our ears.

I would love to celebrate this event with a nice composition (give me some time!). Perhaps Arasi (our resident poet laurate) will give a start.

Do post pictures of the award as well as details of your reserch for our enlightenment.

Of course there is no doubt that those who love CM have the spark of genius in them which will lead them to great heights in all their fields of endeavour.

Here are some additional details

National Science Award 2008

Professor Mohan Balasubramanian
Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory &
Department of Biological Sciences, National University of Singapore.

"For his contributions towards unraveling mechanisms that control cell
division in eukaryotic cells"

Cell division (aka cytokinesis) is all about spatial and temporal regulation. Defects in cytokinesis lead to deleterious increases in cellular ploidy and has the potential to cause cancer. Professor Mohan Balasubramanian's laboratory studies cytokinesis in fission yeast, a simple single-celled eukaryote, to understand mechanisms that control the physical division of a mother cell into two daughters. Similar to human cells, the fission yeast uses an actin-myosin based contractile ring for the process of cytokinesis.

Professor Mohan Balasubramanian is a Temasek Senior Investigator and Deputy Director at the Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory. He is also a Professor of Biological Sciences at the National University of Singapore.

Professor Mohan Balasubramanian's group has identified several key components of the contractile cell division ring and determined important functional aspects that pertain to the spatial and temporal regulation of cell division. Such studies have led to the findings that the cell division machinery is placed at the mid cell region by signals that positively influence this location as well as through negative regulators that exclude cytokinesis at all other locations. Professor Mohan Balasubramanian's group has also uncovered reciprocal links between master regulators of the cell cycle and the cellular cytoskeleton. These control switches ensure proper and timely completion of one round of cell division before the next round is initiated. Research in the Balasubramanian laboratory has uncovered key mechanisms that contribute to the fidelity of the cell division process and thereby preventing deleterious increases in cellular ploidy in eukaryotic cells.

For his outstanding contribution to towards unraveling mechanisms that control cell division in eukaryotic cells, Professor Mohan is awarded the 2008 National Science Award.

Our minds are in synch! We don't need modern equipments to think alike. My own research work (in my previous 'incarnation in the academia') has provided mathematical proof of 'thought waves' :)

At any rate let us enjoy the success of our present generation of youngsters.

Solid proof that CM expands our creative brains!

Nothing wrong folks with me! Lots of domestic commitments and the 'fine Summer' was keeping me away. Add to that a computer crisis. I happened to click on a news announcemnt of a breakthrough in science which installed a gory 'chinese virus' (Worm?) in my computer wiping away many precious files. The recovery has been rather slow . Now-a-days I am even scared to open emails from our Rasika members unless I trust them implicitly :)

Also spending time learning CM from a 'grand shiShya' (shiShya's shiShya) of SSI which is bringing back fond memories of my days of yore with the pitAmahA!

Hope to be back soon to share the joys with all of you. But at present let us focus on the honour to our dear (Singapore) Forumite!

Congrats Mohan / Kamalamba... and also to gobilalitha/balu mama...

I quote thiruvalluvar

"Eendra pozhudhinum peridhuvakkum than maganai
sandron ena ketta thaai"

Great is the joy of the mother when a child is born to her; but greater is her joy when she hears his unblemished character and merits feom others.

Taking a liberty
EnRa pozhuthinum perdhuvakkum tham makkaLai
sAnROr ena kETTa peRRor.

Greater is the joy of parents when they hear their offsprings are meritorius; than even while giving birth to them.

Incidentally I notice that this reasearch has strong impliications to the control of 'the dreaded Cancer cells (the scourge of mankind) and may we hope some day Mohan's team will put back that genie in the bottle!

Dear all

Thanks very much.

I am very touched by all the congratulatory messages. One of the nicest things about this award is that, due to the award, I have heard from so many old and new friends.

I will look forward to meeting most (if not all) of you at the season 2008.

Thanks once again.

Dear Mohan ji

My heartiest congratulations on this monumental acheivement!!!! My congrats and pranams to also to your father, gobilalitha ji.

I have always held you in the highest esteem for your academic excellence and leadership qualities, as your junior in Madras Christian College, department of Chemistry, to be specific. You used to sing well too and had a taste for Classical music of the highest order. I still fondly remember the encouraging words I got from you for my short recitals, as a mad-after-music young aspirant.

I pray the Almighty that many more laurels be showered on your goodself.
