Can I get the lyrics of this bhajan song titled " Ankhini Mein Base Jiya..." of sant Surdas. Sri. OS Arun had sung this bhajan beautifully in his albums.

Dear Mr. Lakshman/Krishna,
Thanks for your efforts to get the lyrics. The first line of the song goes like this(as per audio listening) " Ankhini mein Base Jeeyomein Base- Jeeyo mein Basath is Bibhas piyaro" I may be wrong also. Please try again for me. Thank you.

krishnaa,

I think it has to be 'akhiyOn mein basE'....ankhini doesn't make any sense at all.

Please edit/correct the following 2 sets of lyrics which are copied from listening to the song. If any one can give the meaning most relevant to the song is also welcome. Thank you.

AnkhIni mEn basa jIyA mEn basa
jIyA mEn basata nisa divasa piyArO
tan mEn basE hain man mE base
rasanA hamE basE nandvArO
sudhi mEn basE hain budhi hUn mEn basE
ang rang mEn basE mukuT hArO
sur bala base ghar hUn main base
sang jO tarang jO jalana niyArO
======================================
ANKHINI MEIN BASA, JEEYA MEIN BASA
JIYAMEIN BASATA NISA, DIVASA PIYAARO
TAN MEIN BASE HAI, MANMEIN BASE
RASANA HAME BASE, NAND VAARO (ANKHINI)
SUDHI MEN BASE HAI, BUDHI HUN MEIN BASE
ANG ANG MEIN BASE, MUKUT VAARO
SOOR BAN BASE, GARV HUN MEIN BASE
SANG JO TARANG JO JALNA NYAARO (ANKHINI)
======================================

I think this is what I hear. If krishnaa hears differently, she can help refine it further.

ANkhinI mein basE jiy mein basE
jiy mein basat nis divas piyArO
tan mein basE hain, man mein basE
rasnAvOn mein basE nandvArO
sudhi mein basE hain, buddhihU mein basE
ang ang mein basE mukuTvArO
sUr ban basE gharhU mein basE
sang jO tarang jO jal na niyArO

Loose translation: In addition to the standard disclaimers, I have to add that braj bhAsa is so deceptively simple, and yet so rich, it is tough to translate into another language that is rather limited. :)

(He) resides (basE) in (mein) my eyes (AnkhinI) and in my heart (jIy) - My beloved (piyArO) resides (basat) in my heart continually/always (divas - day, nisi - night).

(He) resides in my body (tan) and in my mind (man) - My beloved krishNA (nandvArO) resides in each and every one of my creations/thoughts (rasnAvOn).

(He) resides in my consciousness (sudhi) and in my intellect (buddhihU) - my beloved, who wears a peacock crown (mukuTvArO), resides in every fiber/limb (ang ang) of this body of mine.

I (sUrdAs) reside with (sang) him everywhere - be it the forest (ban) or my house (gharhU) - our relationship is like that of water (jal) and the waves (tarang) - just as the water can't get rid of (na niyArO) the waves, so, too, will krishNa find it difficult to get out of me.

The irony of the opening lines is the fact that sUr was blind, and yet, felt that the lord resided in his eyes! Blind or not, the Lord did bless him with such inner vision, that his descriptions of krishNa, vrindAvan and gOkul are so realistically painted.

EDITED based on krishnaa's correction

Respected sri. Shankar, Thank you so much for your very sincere attempt ,to bring out the most relevant wordings of this song (almost the same, what Sri.OS Arun also would have sung), which is really one of the gems Bhajan of Surdas. The meaning given is fantastic and really appealing. May my lord Vishnu shower continuous blessings on you and other members of this forum for all the efforts.

Ravi,
wonderful attempt !!!!!!!!!!!!!
everything is ok exept the following line :

rasnAvOn mein basE nandvArO

i will listen to it again and tell you, i cant really compile the menaing of those words... otherwise your translation is really fascinating. Because braj bhasha to english is tooooooo much work in terms of translation.

the second line should be jiy mein basat nisi divas piyArO
where nisi means the night and divas means the day.... hence meaning My beloved resides in my heart day and night

The 4th line of the song begins with " rasna hu mein basE NandvArO"
looks more appropriate to the first 3 lines. (the hindi word rasana (verb) means to feel happy/joy). The meaning of this line, therefore, can be that ..." get stayed(basE) in a state of happiness/joy over His (NandVarO)thoughts.

rshankar:

The lyrics:-
(I have not attempted to transliterate this Surdas bhajan.)

आँखिनि मैं बसै, जिय मैं बसै, हिय मैं बसत निसि दिवस प्यारी ।
तन मैं बसै, मन मैं बसै, रसना हूँ मैं बसै नँदवारौ ॥
सुधि मैं बसै, बुधिहू मैं बसै, अंग-अंग बसै मुकुटवारौ ।
सूर बन बसै, घरहु मैं बसै, संग ज्यौ तरंग जल न न्यारौ ॥

the download link gives an error msg as Krishnaa says - rshankar how were you able to listen?

Lovely translation, rshankar, one nit-pick - basE - seems to me to indicate the entire piece should read as a prayer... that is, may he reside in my eyes OR ...may I find always his association everywhere, in the forest, at home, like water and ripples that cannot be separated.

I feel this because Surdas, like the other greats, was humble and would be more likely to put things in the typical pehlE Ap style of extreme courtesy rather than an ..." I (sUrdAs) reside with (sang) him everywhere..." which suggests himself to be important...

I heard it when the link was available, (or I may have a commercial version of this in a cassette somewhere - it was a long time ago, and with my memory as it is these days, I can't guarantee anything!).
smala, Good catch. It (probably) is: '(He) resides with sUrdAs', rather than the other way around. That is some of problems I have when translating from Indian languages, because I subconsciously apply the rules of English grammar and syntax - I do try consciously to not do that, but I am not always successful!
