A bump-up for this thread to remind Mumbai rasikas of two good concerts scheduled for this weekend. Smt. Priya Suresh, an excellent local artiste, will sing on Saturday as part of the talent promotion concerts at Jasubhai Hall in the Shanmukhananda complex. On Sunday, our talented forum member Kum. Sriranjani Santhanagopalan will perform. Details are available earlier in the thread. Looking forward to these concerts .

shankarabharanam: tickets are avaiailable at the gate for what I anticipate would be a very reasonable fee - probably in the region of Rs. 100. Since I'm a life member, my knowledge on ticket rates is iffy. Sorry!
Nice to hear about your cousin providing vocal support to Neyveli Sir - looking forward to hearing him sing tomorrow.

I think this was not part of the scheduled concert...Its some kind of memorial concert where they are going to pay respect to Justice Shri Krishna's father who was also associated with the Sabha...I came to know from some one that they announced it during Nithyasree's concert..I called up the Sabha authorities and they confirmed it too...

I had landed up at Shanmukhananda Hall along with my folks on Saturday thanks to mixing up the dates! On Sunday I was held up by a couple of things and reached the venue only at about 7. By then I was told that a few pieces had been sung - only after looking at the list to I realize how much I missed - Sankarabharanam was already on by the time I took my seat!
An extended tani for Purvi Kalyani must have eaten into Prashant's concert plan and prompted him to seek a clarification on whether he could sing a Pallavi. We were fortunate that the gentleman addressed wasn't one of those crusty clock-watchers that one typically associates with the title of sabha secretary...an alaapana is a nebulous, amorphous being...like free verse, it confronts the artiste with limitless space. The dabbler enjoys the apparent freedom only until, starved of oxygen and beyond gravity's grasp , he vanishes into infinite nothingness. To beat thin air into shape, requires a voice and I allude, not to Prashant's somewhat high-pitched timbre that fetched a comparison with Musiri, but to that of the poet who polishes his burgeoning passion with discipline of technique...who knows what he wants to say and how to say it....such was Prashant's approach to Surati - unbounded in his love for the raga, yet mindful of lines that may not be crossed...it was a very competent concert overall - but it's always special to hear an artiste sing something he really enjoys.
The "swara ragamalika" was the result of the violinist failing to latch on to on to Prashant's Ganamoorthi. However he did a fine job overall - Purvikalyani was particularly good. The rhythm section, like I noted earlier, should have been more mindful of the watch considering that it was a 2 hour concert but provided great support otherwise.
I do wish Prashant makes an effort to try and get in a concert or two during the season. If nothing else, I hope we can have at least have the Prashant-Ram combo in Dec...

The concert was roughly 2 hrs 40 mins. As said by Vijay, the Tani was quite long (23 minutes) thereby eating into the RTP which could have been more elaborate. It was for about 20 min nevertheless, complete with anulomam exercise and interesting swaras. Very good support by the mdridangam/ghatam artistes. Quite in line with the song and the mood.
Prashant was quite unwell 2 days before the concert but that did not deter him from giving his best in terms of pure unadulterated classical music. Highlights to me were the beautiful swaras in nattai and mukhari (full of raga bhavam), and the gay abandon Surati. He would have done TNS proud with his ragamalika viruttam. Prashant also did subtle kanakkus in the swaras, but it never ate into the soukhyam aspects of his music. It is a lesson to be learnt by many who are in quest of thrill of kanakku right from the first line of a song or swaram. The violinist (like the audience) was very appreciative of Prashant's music going by the number of aha from him.
Kanakku should be like icing on the cake - in moderation, if the cake itself is not there, there can be no kanakkus. Too much icing also cannot be enjoyed.
Can this post (from Prashant's lilst onwards) be moved to concert review's thread?

Vijay and Arun have been extremely kind in their comments. I learnt a lot during this concert and have a lot of things I need to work on after this learning experience.
It's the perfect time for me to sincerely thank our tireless and erudite translator, rshankar. It is entirely due to his generosity in explaining the meanings of songs word by word, that I was able to render the aTANA, SankarAbharaNam and rAgamAlikA viruttam pieces. Heartfelt thanks also to arasi and Rajani who were also kind enough to provide clarifications especially for the naTarAjA pATTu.

Prashant,
You make us proud. A model student you truly are, enthusiastic and diligent. Your choice of songs speak of your fervor, and of those you learn from. Looking forward to listening to you in Chennai this December.
Meanwhile, a sampling would be nice!
Vijay and anusri,
Thank you for your writing-ups.. Yes, looking forward to listening to Prashant accompanied by Ram...
