Dear Rasikas
I am really happy to be a member in rasikas.org. Latest gadgets, current topic in music, ragas discussion and you name a topic in carnatic music, it is available. Very nice compilation. Is there any discussion relating to Yoga and Music. The music in the earlier century gave importance to music from Naabi. The present generation do more research in voice culture and improvisation of music that is pleasing to ears. I don't want to digress the matter whether the singing should be from Naabi or from upper portion of kantam viz. false voice. I want to know more on music and yoga by pre trinity trinity and post trinity vaageyakaras through their compositions.
Thanks in advance to know more on this.

Yoga literally means to unite. i.e., uniting with the ultimate source of enenrgy or God.
Our musical Trinity considered music itself as yoga, a vehicle for Deliverence.
May be other members can throw some light on yogasanas and music.

Music when practiced appropriately is nAda yOga and so too is dance (nATya yOga). Both Indian music and dance are but means of uniting the jIvAtmA with the paramAtmA.

Please see the following wiki entries (by forum member, Shri Govindan) for two of Tyagaraja's compositions that refer to this topic.

http://www.rasikas.org/wiki/sobhillu-saptasvara
"Worship the divinities of sapta svara effulgent at navel, heart, throat, tongue and nose etc."

And:

"Understanding the nAda emanating from mUlAdhara is, indeed the blissfull emancipation; O My Mind! Recognising the locations (in the body) of primal sounds of the seven svaras is indeed emancipation."

As Shankar points out the Trinity were indeed practitioners of 'Nada Yoga'.
There is a Book Swara Yoga by Swami Mukthabodhananda (Yoga Publications Trust, Munger, Bihar India ) whic provides the sanskrit verses and translations of Siva Swarodaya which enunciates the principles of Practice of Yoga in that context. It is a Tantrik Text!
