Does anyone have any rendering of Tyagaraja's "parAshakti manuparAdha nApai parAkEla nammA"?

I see it in the TS Parthasarathy book as a kriti in Saveri on the TiruvaiyAru dharmasamvardhani but I dont recall ever hearing this kriti being sung or played.

Thanks

thenpaanan,

There is a commercial CD of Vijay Siva on Devi krithis, which has this. Very nice collection.

Dr BMK has also sung it on one of his Sangeetha release. IIRC, it is titled Devi Kritis, and has sarOjadaLanEtri (shankarAbharaNa), pUrNachandra bimba (rAgamAlike) and mAYe tvam (taraMgiNi). A very nice collection.

This song (Parashakti Manu - Saveri) was a Chembai favourite, I think you can find it among his 78rpm recordings, and one or two of his Poomuli Mana concerts which are circulating online.

One more song I like a lot in Saveri is "Shankari Shankuru Chandramukhi" of Shyama Sastri

ksrimech,
Isn't Gowri Ramnarayan, Sri Kalki's grand daughter (Smt. Anandi's daughter) and Sri Sadasivam's grand-niece? IIRC, she began accompanying Smt. MSS when Smt. Radha Viswanathan became too ill to do so.

rshankarji,
You are right. It was a slip of my thought. For some reason (I dont know why?), I thought she was Vijaya Rajendran's daughter.

I have heard Arunachala Kavi's Yaro Ivar Yaro in both Saveri and Bhairavi. Any idea who tuned these and which one is older/original?

Looks like the original rAgA was sAvEri. It has been popular in bhairavi though. H.Ramakrishnan has sung it in hamsadhvani on sangeetha 6BCDB 548 cassette.

Smt. Vedavalli and some other artistes today still sing yArO ivar yAro in the original sAvEri. At a concert in 2000 at Shanmukhananda, Mumbai, Smt. Vedavalli informed the audience that it was Sri Ariyakudi who set this piece to an alternate and equally beautiful tune in bhairavi.

Thanks for all your pointers to renderings to "parAshakti" in sAveri. I had a nice time listening to this kriti -- it has one of the simplest melodic lines for a sAveri kriti (IMHO, only "murugA" is simpler melodically). I have been humming "ina parAdhula nirAdarinchE" all day for a few days now. In the recording posted Vijay Siva sings the first line as "parAkEla manuparAdha nadupai" rather than "parAkEla manuparAdha nApai"? Are nApai and nAdupai interchangeable?

thanks again

Continuing my journey into Saveri, a long time ago I had heard a moving rendition of a padam "varattum kumaraswami" by a student of the Brinda Mukta school. I remember it being incredibly difficult to grasp. But I did not tape it then. Does anyone here have a rendering of this padam? The name of the composer and lyrics would also be appreciated. Google did not unearth anything useful.

Many thanks

Thanks, meena! I had not paid particular attention to the lyrics until now. Very interesting.

Does anyone have a rendering of this padam?

'Etunammina O Manasa" by Patnam Subramaniam Iyer.

Musiri's guru was a specialist in saveri (Saveri Sabesa iyer). probably from his guru's saveri only Musiri got the lamenting Bhava in to his system!

Another not very well-known composition in sAvErI is "pAhimAm giritanayE" by irayavarman thampi. Chitra has rendered it in her Devi krithis album for Manorama Music.

Kanna talli nIvu by TyAgarAja SwAmigal in SaavEri - this beautiful Devi kriti is not at all heard in concerts. I had heard some 15/20 years back. Recent singers stick to Sri Raaja GopAla, Murugu Muruga etc. I do not know why?

Kriti Ramabhana is best sung by DKJ and his version is the best.U will have it in Sangeethapriya site under DKJ.Tulasi Jagajanani of Thyagaraja is also a very good composition in this raga.Durusuga is another popular one among this generation singers.

U cant miss out on the varnam-Sarasuda.

I checked on guNakali. There are different varieties of this raga.
One is placed under bhairavi thAT (tODi in CM). It is supposed to be a fusion of Asavri and bhairavi ragas and it is a difficult raga to sing because one has to bring out the chaya of asavri by using ony bhairavi thAT notes.
There are three varieties of guNakali in bilAval thAT (ShankarAbharaNa in CM). All of them use vakra sancharas and none resmble karnATak sAvEri (SRMPDS/SDPMGRS).
The raga that is close to sAvEri is jOgiya which has: SRMPDPNS/SNPDPMRS and guNakrI which has: SRMPDS/SDPMRS as it's scale.

Indeed, I have not heard this kriti at all. Devi kriti in Saaveri by TyAgarAja should be a treat. :(

Rama Bana rendered by Mysore Vasudevachar is available at http://sangeethapriya.org/Downloads/vas ... Saveri.mp3

Dikshitar's Karikalabhamukham rendered by G N Balasubramaniam set to Rupakam is available at the tribute section of Sangeethapriya I think.

S Sowmya has rendered Devi Pavane (Swathi Thirunaal). I have a download.

I think Dhanusuka is Saveri - I am not sure though. T Chandrasekaran's violin performance of this is available.

Balamuralikrishna has rendered Enthanerchina in Suddha Dhanyasi.

Cheers
