Raag ghanta

This morning,inJayaTV I was fortunate to hear ashtapathi 'pravisa radhe' by Sri Udayalur Kalyanaraman in raaga ghanta, whichSEEMED TO BE SIMILAR ,YET DIFFERENT FROM DHANYASI,AND PUNNAGAVARALI .Will somebody explain /? gobilalitha

Gobilalitha, Please listen to the link here,Ashtapadi-21 sung by Sri. Thanjavoor Thyagaraja Bhagavatar in rag GhAnta.

Rag Ghanta is the janya of 20th Mela Natabhairavi. Also ascribed to the 8th mela H.Todi. This raga has another name called 'GhantAravam'. The Aro.sgrgmpns and Avro. sndpmgrs
R1 note comes as a foreign note in phrase srs/sgrs/mgrs. This rag shines well when sung in madhyama sruti. Punnagavarali is closely allied raga due to limitations in sancharas when sung in madhyama sruti. This is a sankeerna raga due to traces of Punnagavarali, Bhairavi, Dhanyasi ragas in the raga sancharas. Thyagaraj's Jayamangalam kirtan in Adi tala is in this raga. There is another popular Kriti "rama rama ramachandra' by Thyagaraja in this rag. The kriti ' Sri. Kamalambika ' of Dikshitar is also in this raga. There are many kathakali padams in this raga and all kathakali stage performances do include this raga in their songs list, as it is said that this raga evokes scenes depicting pathos and sorrow throughout its sancharas. I have given my little knowledge out of Kelvi gnanam only and not an authority or expert. So for any mistakes, please correct me.

There is a Kamalambha Nava Varnam in Ganta and Sri TK Govinda Rao explains about the raga lakshana in that. You can visit the cleveland aradhana site to listen to that module
