Maharajapuram Ramachandran and Mannargudi Eashwaran Concert - Sept 25, 2008, Grey's Lake Temple - North of Chicago
First of all, I am not qualified to write about such great artists. But, I would love to share my thoughts.
Residents in the North side of Chicago suburbs were in for a great treat tonight. Students of these artists put together a quick concert at a new temple in the North side of Chicago 65 miles away from the regular Indian event temples. They decided about this on Monday and worked with volunteers to squeeze a concert. This concert is aside from the regular and well organized tour that the artists are on currently. However, there are many rasikas in that area as there are several companies that hire them. An email was enough to get so many of them on a THURSDAY night, even though Friday was NOT a holiday:-))) That was the NAME BRAND OF THESE ARTISTS.
The concert hall was filled with Bhakti Bhavam by the artist and there was pin drop silence even though the hall was jam packed ON A THURSDAY NIGHT.
Eashwaran mama's mridangam was a bliss for onlookers. He played exactly like the song and I have never seen anyone play with such perfect blending of the bhakti. I dont know what those mridangam strokes are called, but it was kind of like a rupaka thing, 2 on one side and a slide on the other hand to blend in. It was simply supurb. I noticed this style for the raghavendra song below. I am so happy that I went there driving 65 miles!
Songs
Papanasan Sivan's muladara ganapathim - Ragam, swaram
Endaro mahanubhavulu
Hindolam - samajavaragamana - main, ragam, niravel, swaram
kambhoji - kuraludi mamelam - oothukadu kavi
virutam followed by raghavendra bajji savasa yadide - misra sivaranjani - CAPTURED AND MESMORIZED the audience
govindanane - purandaradasa
thillana
bho shambho - revati
