Did not know that O. S. Arun was in the 'senior' slot! Maybe the first time with 2 siblings in 2 separate 'senior' slots!

Looks like Smt. Vijayalakshmi Subramaniam has also been moved up to the 'senior' slot!!

both the brothers have been singing on senior slots for a while now. While the elder of the siblings get shifted between the mornings and the evenings, the youngers has always been in the evenings only.

and Smt. Vijayalakshmi Subramanian sang in the senior slot, last year as well.

Nice list, but why is that suryaprakAsh is still figuring only in the afternoon slot . He is nearing 40 in age, singing close to 20 years, has a solid vidwat, delivery,a very high manOdharmam, to some extent a good vageyakkara & and his madurai mani bAni touch .His concert is followed by ArunA sairam, that perhaps is the best consolation.

ANother surprise is to see vidushi rAji gOpAlakrishnan being fitted with all super seniors in the morning slot , I was looking forward to hear her in the afternoon or evening slot , a very gifted and a brilliant singer. She is not that old to be fitted in that league.

The last surprise is not seeing vidushi premA rangarAjan at all.

On a side note , would be great if academy extends by another 3 to 4 days till Jan 5th 2009 the concert season, considering there are more singers as of today , but of course dancers will get a little less share, but even those dates can be pushed a little bit further.

No Suguna Purushothaman, Neela Ramgopal this year. Shashank is performing in the 10 Am slot! Wonder why! Isnt that slot only for senior musicians of the older generation?

And one of my friends pointed out - No Priya Sisters.

Great to finally get the list - I can now start planning my vacation! Some observations:

Most of last year's debutants in the evening slot have held on to their positions. I am also happy to see Sangeetha Sivakumar back in the prime slot. Sadly Gayathri Girish is missing twice in a row
Only one new face in the evening slot and one long overdue - Pantula Rama. Folks in Chennai ought not to miss this!
Quite a few seem to have made the transition from the junior to sub-senior slot, however hardly any have made the evening slot grade. I think it must be Sikkil Gurucharan's fifth consecutive sub-senior slot!
All the best to forum members for the Season including those who are not featured in the Academy. I agree Suryaprakash deserves a primtime slot and am surprised to see Mannarkoil Balaji's omission
Of course one wonders why Nedunuri is missing from action after his cracker of an opener last year! I do hope he performs at the other sabhas - especially carnatica's season fest which was so refreshingly different last year. Good to see that their efforts in promoting Parssala Ponammal has resulted in her being featured at the Academy this year! Of course the credit must finally go to Prince Rama Verma for bringing her music to mainstream rasikas.

Yes, with all those number of concerts, wish Balaji had been given a slot. Hope he plays in several other venues and we can listen to him.

Ah.. right, it comes to me now. I will chalk it up to my not paying attention to Sahityam. Great song (http://www.musicindiaonline.com/p/x/oqb ... As1NMvHdW/). That whole song is full of such lines and you roped in the most appropriate one. Neat. The second line is 'paDayillada mannavara'. Krishna and Sanjay fans may say it is 'mannavarillada paDaya' ;)

She was very much there (in the senior slot) last year as well!

VK,
I would prefer your saying that you did not pay attention to sAhityA once--not any more!
Even without your asking for lyrics, I will rewrite the line as paDaiyillAda
mannavarA? You may change it to groupies illAda perum pADagarA?--if you wish :)

MA has come out with this year list of concerts in December

http://www.musicacademymadras.in/2008-w ... edule.html

Sort of who's who. My observations.

1) Surprise inclusion is Maharajapuram Ramachandran.
2) Surprise omision is Gayathri (Veena), Trichur Ramachandran, Mala Chandrasekhar, PRIYA SIS.
3) Considering the Prime Time schedule, except Gayathris (2), no senior Lady artists are appearing. Another Surprise for me !!!
4) Do not know On what basis Hyderabad Brothers and Neyveli Santanagopaln come in Prime Time (with great respect to their vidwat. I feel they are not in great form)
5) Junior Sirkazhi is not there !
6) Yesudos is completely forgotten (for those who love his Harivarasanam !!)
7) As expected Papanasam Ashok Ramani, (who was there, last year) is not appearing.
8) Shriram Gangadharan, once a Star performer is not at all in the First round of musicians, is appearing in this list.
9) Unnikrishnan is in prime time. So, you can expect Kalyana Vasantham RTP.
10) Some of the names, I have not even known. But my knowledge of CM artsts is limited. So, leave it to the readers.

(Mod note: Moved from another thread to here )

it is of course demeaning for his ability. nice voice and draws more listners than some of the dubious entrys in evening time. some of the singers like vijaylasmi s. and lakshmi r. and sangita. i dont think give main concerts anywhere else. id ont know now but couple of years ago even for their free programes not much audience.
suryaprakash and sikkil gurucharan is far better choice.
academy has only contempt for professional musicians. amateurs with i-t jobs and mbas are more fashionable i suppose. media only covers them.
at least gayatri venkat has been given good timing. it is diffuclt to listen to afternoon concerts, lot of people sleep in the academy.

'lot of people sleep in the academy'!
Yes, a few do doze off, especially in the afternoon concerts! Age, fatigue (a result of concert-crawling) and after lunch. I do not take a nap in the afternoon, but was shocked to find myself dozing off in an Academy concert!
Yes, Suryaprakash and Gurucharan have outgrown their 'siesta' slot...
A heartening thing though about the morning and afternoon free concerts is, a lot of true rasikAs who live in the suburbs (mainly home makers) come to listen with such fervor and concentration. Bless them...

It is ok if they sleep; the problem is only if they snore

You have cutcheri on the stage-araTTai
cutcheri on your left; added to it is the kuRaTTai
cutcheri on your right- you paid for one
And what you get is three.:D

In addition, sometimes there is 'kosu cutcheri
and also mostly 'kosuRu cutcheri'-
(enthusiastic rasikas singing along)
we have discussed this before.

b) those who put tappu tALam AND LOUDLY

I used to findt the organizer's requests not to keep thala at some of the U.S. concerts annoying. But I am turning around to that point of view. In a recent concert, during the thani the mridangist was trying to show some subtle sounds with his left hand and there were a couple of people in the audience keeping thalam quite vigorously ( but correctly ) and completely drowning the mridangam sound. That was very annoying. I tried the 'turning the head towards them' treatment but that did not have any effect. ;)

The interesting thing is the main artist had a piece of cloth on his lap and we could not hear any thala keeping sound from the artist. That provided the necessary damping effect. Rasikas should consider using such simple methods. I know it is second nature for all of us but it is definitely possible to keep the thalam without producing distracting noise.

And then there are air tALamists--no problem of noise there--but their vigorous movements can be visually distracting. If they sit in a row ahead of you, they look as though they are doing an Arati to a deity. Such a person can gyrate so much, he can dislodge someone sitting in the row ahead of him if they happen to sit on plastic chairs, or nearly jab one from the back!
The amusing thing to watch is the contrast between action and inaction.
All the vigorous air tALam keeping freezes into a short spell of dozing off. Then, back in action again...

ten people putting talam will give you ten concerts: they are seldom absolutely in sync. Even musicians on the stage are sometimes not in split-second synchronisation, so it's hard to expect it of mere mortals.

Happy to hear of another convert! Perhaps we'll wipe out the habit yet :D !

Arasi, LOL! Speaking of dozing off, last year during the season, a lady sitting next to me dozed off, and a good twenty minutes later, awoke with a jerk and immediately exclaimed, "chu chu, besh besh" and converted the jerk of her head into a complimentary shake! What acting.

I have kind of gotten over noisy tala keeping after some particularly embarrassing lapses but I can't help remain a visually distracting element as many a harried musician will no doubt testify!

Oh... I often "doze off" --- except that some part of me is conscious* and attending to the music.

Sometimes, I try to keep the fingers moving, just so it doesn't look as if I'm asleep! But then I have to open my eyes regularly to check that my talam has not lost its place.

*usually!
