Lakshman,
It was also sung as a rAgamAlikA in kuRinji, nAdanAmakriyA and kAnaDA before the kApi version came into vogue...

The kapi version(as sung today) is somewhat similar to an old Saigal song-I forget the name.at least the opening lines.

Yes Lakshmanji, that rings a bell. I have heard my father always hum it; he is a great Saigal fan; will check with him.

Balam aye baso mera man me , sawan aya tum na aye. Punarvasu, how I wish I have a talk with your father, who I am sure is not only a favorite of saigal , will definitely like very old songs of Pankaj MUllick, KCDey, . If, I am asked to select 10 of the best songs of hindi films SOJARAJAKUMARI BY
K L Saigal will be one of them, in addition to Ayega by Lata from film Mahal....From poonkuyil to another nightingale Lataji, I am not able to refrain myself from going off tangentially from the main subject . oh! my nostalgia , leave me alone. gobilalitha

Nostalgia is fine, Gobilalitha, and that has got a lot to do with past history. Many music lovers of this generation are keen on listening to the stalwarts of yesteryears, both in classical and film music. And there are sevseral music historians out there too.
While I like 'sOjA rAjkumAri, my favorite is 'sundar nAri, prItam pyAri'.
Why don't we adjourn to the Light Music Section now? :)

GBL, arasi,
yes, 'sOJa rAjakumAri'-how did I forget it? My father used to sing it for me when I was kid-:)
