It would have been an awesome concert, but for nearly 20 minute speech by organizer. The concert started around 5.45pm. Tani completed around 7.25pm, organizer said something to artist and took the mike. He asked audience not to go, and an RTP will follow. And he spoke for 20 minutes until 7.45pm, and said - concert will continue for 10 more minutes? !!! It was very very sad, to be sitting there. The concert was packed with devi keerthanas, a good mixture of various composers, taalas. Sumitra added devotional flavour by including nice slokas before 2,3 songs. The ragas were rendered leisurely, and good vishranti. Initial part of concert, mike was giving problems, it took a while to settle down. When Sumitra was singing 1st kala swara kalpana, while concluding each avarthana, she sang "thamasamu seyakave" in 2nd kalam, and vice versa while singing 2nd kala swaras. Garuda dhwani song was new one to me - i have heard only tatwa meruga tarama - that too only TKRangachari rendition (the one with awsome swara kalpana!!!!). Sumitra announced that she is singing meenakshi memudam as mark of dedication to dikshitar, who quit the life on deepavali day, and rightly chosen the appropriate line for neraval. Thani was short and sweet - just 10 minutes. I was told, artist was preparing for RTP, and not sure what surprise was in store. Post tani items were well rendered, Ayigiri nandini was a surprise, she sung two kalams.

10 minute RTP's aren't exactly underheard...sit through Academy concerts and chances are, you will hear 1 or 2!

Hari,

Usually the monthly concerts at BTM academy have some set pattern. The main item of the day will be an RTP and post that, there will be a 'devar nama' and mangalam. I am not sure if this is a rule, but have seen it usually so ( OSTs concert was an exception (without RTP), even there after the main, he sang a Purandara Dasa krithi followed by mangalam).
