It applies to all artists. Of course, many people who give votes of thanks (and of course I would prefer they did not) are sincere and speak both from the heart and from the knowledge in their heads. I also understand that others feel they do not have the confidence to speak without notes.

Prince's concertis in memory of Maharani Sethu Parvathy Bayi at Rangavilasam Palace,Trivandrum at 5:30 pm on november 9th.Maharani Sethu Pavathy Bayi is his great grandmother who made him learn music at an young age, when he himself was not aware of his talent.Varmaji has written about this in some other thread.
