THEY ARE ALL Superstitions after all.
Anyway Ahiri is one of my favourites. I guess the way it has to be interpreted is that "one may even go without food for an entire day if he / she sings or listens to Ahiri." Now somebody wld have commented like this and today we have an entirely different version of the same. Just an observation.

coolkapali, that's a nice way to think about Ahiri (though not at all sure that's how it started)!

Whether they sing (play) Ahiri or not, there are times when musicians do go hungry. Look at the schedules they have: planes, trains and buses to catch--singers avoid eating before a concert, speeches add to the delay and at times they have to rush without a meal to catch a train amid traffic...

Does any professional singer tries to avoid raahu kaalam before starting the concert?

Does any man or woman avoid doing his or her work during work hours due to rAhu kAlam (so-called inauspicious time of the day)?

I talked with a Chartered Accountant a couple of years ago who told me, very seriously, that he was unwilling to sign off accounts on the less auspicious days of the week, and that if there was absolutely no alternative he preferred to put the previous/next day date.

Superstitions can be circumvented too. As school girls, when we were nowhere near 'wood', we used to 'touch' our heads (wooden heads:)

Members Apologies for joining late on this thread as i was very busy with loads of concerts etc. i am hinting at the thread mentioning about Amrutavarshini.

Yes it rained two years before when Coimbatore was starved of it when our Vidyarthi sang Amirthavarshini (dont know about his Mantra Sidha-but certainly know of his nAda Siddha) for Manoranjitham sabha and it poured heaviliy on that day and all the audience gave him a standing ovation on that day not at the end of the concert but after the kriti was over. It is the belief that moves things even without Amrutavarshini our vidyarthi brought rains at Tirupur about 10 days back where the audience were knee deep in water after his Musical Rains on raga Kiravani. It is the nAda devata (God or Goddess) that is pleased with the perfection of the musical offering more than anything else. It is the unpolluted sincerity of the purpose which is very important to create mysteries. After the concert i jocularly said Neyveli Sir that for your music it rains doubly ...one on his music and another real rain. But he was such a grand master he replied it is double because of my mridangam he said and added that even pure nAda of mridangam brings rains. Anyway i took it as a compliment and in no way to boast here in front of rasikas.

My mom learnt veena from Sri Pitchumani Iyer. He has mentioned in class once that when he played ahiri - to test this superstition - in a kalyana reception ( he was believed , since it was a marriage reception, there will be lots of food or varieties atleast and it may be impossible to not get "any" food) they had to leave the place without even one grain of rice..sambar had turned sour, in rasam some insect had fallen.. rice was completely over, and so was everything else..and everybody was apologising that they could'nt offer him or the accompanying artists anything at all to eat..but he later told them not to worry , it was probably because of his playing ahiri that day..from then on , he never tested these superstitions..

sunadha2003: That is exactly how superstitions form. :)

Now, it is very easy to shatter that superstition in a controlled way. Have someone sing Ahiri every day before lunch without fail. Do this for a month. See if the person has lost considerable weight :)

If so, we can turn the superstition on its head. Singing Ahiri is good for weight loss and good life.

Perhaps this belongs in the pushy NRI thread?!

No! It belongs in a new 'diet sensation' category. If one of us ventures into this business, he could publicize it right here in the forum as an ad.
'Meagerly, with the magic of Ahiri' or 'maigrir avec Ahiri'.
Even if it does not work, we are not 'losers' :). We can say happily that a superstition is just that, and nothing more...

I think dIkshitar later edited the words to "sthambhayE, sthambhayE sthambhayE" so the rains would patter out as when he rendered it in tiruvArUr, it caused a great flood there.

There ough to be modern superstitions developing --- like which ragam to hum to make your supermarket cashier queue move faster than the others, or which to avoid before a journey, as it will surely lead to traffic jams!

Can you all just make up puns at the snap of a finger?!

And lsangeetham, I learn vocal from the crow that perches itself on my windowsill daily. In other words, no, I can't sing to save my life (or the crow's). I learn the violin.

[quote="s_hari"]I was born on Amavasya day :( =(

Why is Navami bad because Rama was born on that day?[/quote

Because it is a Riktha Thithi which is inauspicious according to astrology
