Somehow "Congratulations" does not seem to me a very apt compliment to give to such a great musician. Isn't there something very worldly about it, as though this title was some object he strived to acquire? "Pranaams" seems more appropriate :) Humble Pranaams, therefore, to the great master.

And here is a beautiful article about him: http://www.dharwad.com/bhimsen.html

Bhale may be still better! Shaabash Panditji!

Good to hear about musicians getting the highest award in the land and none more deserving than the evergreen Bhimsen Joshi. It is an honour that has eluded several past greats.

My introduction to the Maestro was through a jugalbandi with BMK. I was not too impressed with the hoarse voice then but then I chanced upon a Multani from the 50s. It just blew me away and till date, well after the tape was scratched out of use, the rendition remains one of my top 5 listening experiences. That agility may be gone but the voice is still remarkably robust for someone well into his 80s. Unfortunately I hae never seen the maestro perform live - perhaps that will change this December....

Perhaps we can talk about some of the live/recorded renditions that made an impression. A privateb label has recently released 4-5 old concerts of Panditji - the Miyan ki Thodi, Puriya Dhanashree and Ramkali are well worth your money.

My pranams to this great legend of Hindusthani Music who always stays in my mind through his rendition abhangs and bhajans. Pray Almighty that Panditji should live long and entertain all rasikas through his real melody and pure music.

In fact he is one of the rarest to receive all the three national awards viz. Padmasri, Padma Bhooshan and Padma Vibhooshan. Let us join to share the happy moment together and admire his present highest honor of Bharat Ratna. Long live pure Sastriya Sangeet.

Radhe Krishna

Kudos to the Singh Govt for discovering the supreme Gem (BJP = Bhimsen Joshi Pandit) which the BJP failed to discover while in power :)

Thrilled at reading the news. Pt. Bhimsen Joshi has been one of my favourite musicians. His contribution to Indian Classical music has been phenomenal. na bhuto na bhavishya. I am happy that the govt had the good sense to honour him with the award at least now.
I thought it would be relevant to post a link to Panditji's multani available on youtube. This one made me go "wow".

I have listened to Bagyadha Laksmi in Carnatic style [MSS/KSG to mention two] plenty of times and then I heard Panditji singing it in Hindustani and blew my mind away. What a genius.

His Jugalbandhi with BMK [available on Youtube,Yaman / Kalyani] is probably the best I've heard Jugalbandhi wise, well apart from the Lalgudi one with Amjad Ali Khan [Mohanam / Bhoopali] :)

Humble pranams and congratulaions to the maestro! The title deserves him! I am sure the Govt of Karnataka will honour him fittingly on top of the *Topmost Civilian* National Award!
