Thanks Dhanyasi...interesting indeed. Could be the beginning of a completely new format...may save artistes trips to the west too!

Certainly caught my attention - saw the trailer too...The sets look nice but the most important thing is to capture the intensity...the film on Sanjay did this very well (besides a lot of other things). This sort of venture could easily descend into elegant sets and guarded, squeaky clean singing...eagerly await the release...meanwhile I thought I saw a slight mixing issue in the last clip (judging from TMK's foot taps)

I understand that mridangam vidwan Sri. K.V. Prasad has acted in the movie "oru naal oru kanavu" directed by Fazil and the music scored by Ilayaraja - the movie also features the song "kaatril varum geethame". A versatile artiste indeed!

I did see that other movie (some B grade flick) - where he comes as the dad whose family commits suicide (rather than be humiliated by a villain), and he also dies in the shock. I forget the name now (prashant is the hero). It was truly a sorry flick and actually one may say TNS was the best of the lot

- of course the (strong) recommendation is "skip it", unless you want to see TNS act

For the first time, an Opera,Don Giovanni, was telecast/screened live from the
Royal Opera House in a cinema theatre to widen its reach.

Bringing concerts in cinema form promises a good experience.

Oh boy, I happened to see that movie of Prashant and TNS too. TNS might be a jack-of-all-trades and master of CM but his acting is hopeless.

Very very well said Koolji. Not to forget that not very long ago, did Palghat Mani Iyer refuse to have mic (owing to the prospect of that encouraging commercialisation).... Gone are the days.... But, still what goes up has to come down and vice versa...

This is an important step in taking CM to the next level, i.e. closer to non-rasika fan base. However, my gut tells me that the revenue will be 'recovered' from the NRIs who would want to own this DVD/Blue-Ray.

Well, it is a new medium...but yeah, it would be a disaster, if we had the popcorn eating crowds pouring in. Howeer if done tastefully (as in cinematic relays of live performances with the concert ambience intact), it could be a way of reaching out to audiences who might otherwise not see a performance live...and capture the concert atmosphere as well

Anyway, it could easily descend into the ludicrous as K-ji probably fears...but I will wait until the screening before deciding..

While watching that trailer, I thought they are setting the stage for the scene to break into some external nature shots like mountains, forests and water falls, let alone a dance scene however tastefully/classically done

That would make the singing a side show. I hope they don't go there but it will be extremely difficult for the director to confine the shots only to the stage. Let us see how it turns out.

Amazed to note to what extent Sanjay Subrahmanyan seems to inspire his successors. The subtle difference is that his successors seem to adopt everything but the musical strengths of Sanjay (one saving element of Sanjay which can never be copied I suppose!!!). In Araar Aasaipadaar, Prasanna Ramaswamy attempted to build a career on Sanjay's music while based on the trailer for this movie, TMK and Jaishree are trying to revive/build on their career through folks like PC Sriram...Just my not so humble opinion, that's all...

komalangi - Please understand that this has nothing to do with the film on Sanjay. Aaraar Aasaipadaar was an art flick. This is a much larger and grandiose effort that will reach many many more people and help establish the primacy of carnatic music in the global art world. This is not a documentary of their lives. I saw the trailer on their website and it is a sign of things to expect on the big screen. It is important to understand the broadmindedness of artistes like Krishna and Jayashri. It is not easy for two prominent stars to come together, shed their egos and involve themselves in a venture like this. I have nothing against Sanjay personally. But please do not unnecessarily cast aspersions on the motives of Krishna and Jayashri. I hope they are singing together in the season. Does any one know about this? Maybe some website that has the info.

Nothing wrong in exploring new media to reach out to audiences. You may call it marketing but it is part of a performing artistes job to do so. I only hope that the medium does not distort the message.

Rajagopal is right about the Sanjay film being completely different but I would not dismiss it as an "art flick" either - I thought it was quite brilliant ...nor was it a "documentary" - as Sanjay himself explained in an interview - he was more the medium, to go back to my analogy, than the message...

TMK and BJ 's Margazhi Ragam, should not be called a " movie "in the sense of an action reel.

It is a continouous moving image of a concert , both individually and jointly, by TMK and BJ. It is a concert being watched in moving images rather than on a static stage.

Excellent camera work, casting, colour architecture, classy art direction, morphing and merging, sound collaboration, a piece of fine art, is what can describe that.

BJ renders, Janani ninnuvina, Madhava mamava . The big issue is, that she is so melodious to the extent of bringing too much 'kuzhaivu' , unilateral in approach, that leads one to a point of monotony .

Straight when we reach that stage, pop comes out TMK, in his wild breezy style and renders his bit. His Javali rendition, Sara Maina , was not very appreciable to this writer, but then was very well made up by a brisk bhava laden Seetahpate and RTP 'Bhramaivaakilam gurukripaya" in chatusra rupakam.

Together they render, Jaya Jaya Vande MAtaram and the curtains are down !

TMK's hand gestures, delectable "jangiri" movements and his 'ahs and uhs" get picturised very well. His well designed , rich ustad style kurtas lend a charm.

BJ's soulful face, "divinity styling" is done wonderfully, with all her solitaires refracting with a "Prismic" effect.

Our pakkavadyam friends, RKS and Arunprakash for TMK and Embar and Patri for BJ, are as best as they are while on stage.

A beautiful shadow effect has been created for their students on the Tambura.
A little light but "no lime light" . Times not up for them yet . So they have been decked up wonderfully and they come across as shadows for their teachers!!
The K and K sisters for BJ, R R and the French student for TMK.

I personally liked the French girl very much, as she was shining in our Indian resplendence!!! Embar Kannan has an excellently handsome screen presence.

I am waiting for the day when someone decides to do one of those re-recording monstrosities (where they overlay rap type of 'music' on top of a classic from yesteryear) using, god forbid, the music of a great maestro like MDR.

This has now become the norm in Hindi filmy music at least.

I chanced to look at this thread becaseu I was curious to read about the film by TMK andBJ and came across this following statement

The film was directed by the late Kuunakkudi Vaidhyanamthan. TNS acted as a hero that is all.
