Heard second hand from friends...

Sri T M Krishna @Chowdiah Hall

As his wont, TMK began with an elaborate Chakkani raja (that's right..the very first item was Chakkani raja) and the highlight was a super duper Jambhupathe in Yamuna Kalyani.

TMK also expressed his appreciation for the audience.

Those who attended he concert please post an elaborate review

Was Jambupathe the main?!! And pray, what did the audience do to win praise from this artiste who never shies away from pulling up audiences for boorish beaviour (though usually with good reason)

The main Item of the concert was Reetigowla(Janani Ninnuvinaa)..... Krishna however sang all complicated sangathi's and birkaa's... Charulatha could not do justice on the violin she never tried most of the sangathi's which could have been played in her turn.

The auditorium was jam packed, however the audience maintained pin drop silence. Krishna was happy about it and he did appreciate the fact.

TMK gave a vocal concert at Chowdiah Hall under the auspices of Ganjam's Flights of Fantasy series
of concerts. The accompanists were:

Smt Charulatha Ramanujam - Violin
Sri N.Manoj Siva -Mridhangam
Sri B.S.Purushotham -Kanjira

Chekkaniraja ... Karaharapriya (S )
Shankari Shankuru .. Saveri (N at Shyamakrishna)
Jambupathe .. Yamuna Kalyani (R)
Padavini .. Salaga Bhairavi (S)
Janani Ninnuvina .. Reethi Gowla (RNS) & Thani
Jayathi jayathi .. Khamas (R sketch)
**onLord Shiva .. Dharbari Kanada (** cannot recollect the song. TMK announced
it was set to tune by Sri Voleti Venkateswaralu
and he was not sure who the composer was.)
Jagododharana .. Hindustan Kapi
Thillana .. Paras
Mangalam

(I have made the list from memory. There could be one more item post thani, not sure)

I would call it an offbeat concert in the sense it did not conform to the conventional
Kutcheri pattern A straight start with Chekkaniraja would have taken many offguard.
The swarams flowed with full vigour and enjoyable.
The nereval for Shankari Shankuru was in typical TMK style-vilambam and madhyamam
woven nicely. There was no swara prasthara.
Yamuna kalyani raga was dealt in detail with sumptous shades of Hindustani style
(ofcourse the raga offers scope for it). The krithi Jambupathe (a rare one of Dikishitar)
was sung in a very leisurely pace. The main piece for the day was Janani Ninnuvina of
Subbaraya Sastry. Rithigowla raga elaboration had the usual pidis and quite good. The
swarams had an interesting start at 'Manasija'.
TMK's voice showed signs of strain at times. A highly energitic and high decible rendering
makes his concert electrifying and leaves the audience awestuck. But I am not sure if this
is good for his voice in the long run. I felt there was a overdose of embellishments throughout.

Charulatha on Violin gave good support, mirrored the vocalist's style and rendering admirably.
YamunaKalyani and Rithigowla raga renditions were crisp and brought out the raga bhava quite well.
Manoj Siva and Purushotham's percussion support were in tune with TMK's vibrancy. Their thani
in Misra Chapu was nice and received a thumping applause.

TMK was appreciative of the audience (for a change) for being very silent and cool all through
the concert.
Overall I would rate Chekkaniraja (even sans raga and nerval) as the best of the concert.

I can surely say that Jagadhodharana was in Kaapi, because I listened to recording to reconfirm the same.

Sorry I stand corrected. It was Hindustani Kapi.

The darabari kanada bhajan in Hindi ran something like... Jai Shivashankar jaya abhayankar.
The piece was bhava laden.

The best in this concert are chakkani raja swarams, reethigowla alapana & swarams. Jambupathe was slow and
was not interesting to me as I never enjoy hindustani flavors.
Actually TMK has sung popular main pieces as the first song in many occassions with high speed swaras.
O rangasaye in Odukathur Mutt and Rama Kadha Sudha in Fort high school are sung by him on earlier
occassions asthe first song.
I was a bit disappointed with missing gana raga (meaning something like sankarabaranam or kamboji or thodi
etc ) as main. And a 230hour concert was also a short time for artist like TMK.

Interesting to see this song list. It has Yamankalyani. Why should he get into all this. He is such a torchbearer of the ghana ragas like Todi, Kambhoji and Bhairavi. Even here he has started the concert with chakkani raja the great Tyagaraja masterpiece in Karaharapriya. I hope he sticks to his strengths during the season. I am looking forward to hearing him with the great Kaaraikkudi Mani in December.

Hi Srinidhi,

I attended the concert of Mr. TM Krishna. Yes he appreciated the audience and also added that the item being presented will be the main piece and stressed that the item will get completed only after thaniavarthanam. That is requesting audiences that they should not go during Thani.

Hi Purist,

This is reference to the artist to take care of voice. I too observed the strains at sometime. Your concern is very valid. But
I think nowadays vidwans are all fitness conscious. Sanjay , again and again has stressed on treadmilling to get better control of breadth. So I guess they also will take care of their voice (the most important thing ) somehow over a period of time.

Correct way of breathing also helps breath control. The correct way is to take deep breaths - not by expanding the chest but by bulging your belly and using as much lung space as possible. The Western Music emphasizes this greatly.
