Hello,
As part of Ganjams Flight of Fantessy on 23-11-2008, Smt Aruna Sairam performed after a long gap. The hall was jam packed and rasikas were made to set on the dias also. It was a wonderful concert. The markable aspect was insted of usual pattern of Varnam and Ganesha stuti, the concert began with Devadideva sri vasudeva in raga Sunada vinodhine. It was good.

Hi Shriroop, the piece is called "Kalinga Nardhana" and presumably refers to Krishna's dance on top of Kaliya, the snake
Kalinga, or Orissa, is also where Ashoka waged a terrible war that changed his life...Mardhana, I think, means destroying - so Kalinga Mardhana could also be a reference to the king.

Purist,
You said you did not find a seat and had to 'go home' (ghar jAnA). So, I added gharjanA (the roar of the lion) to mardhanA.,
The erstwhile kalingA warrior (Vijay, who used to live in that region) spotted the mardhanam in place of nardhanam, so, your leaving for home added one more word to the list

mardana (not mardhana) - could mean both killing, or subduing...
So, in krishNa's enounter with kALIya, it was mardana (subduing - and not killing), followed by nartana - to symbolize the subduing of his ego, after which kALIya along with his wives, left the yamunA.....
I think the kALIya nartanam of Sri OVK (the one that starts with 'yamunA taTaka..') is not a tillAnA - just a superb aural description of the final dance that evokes vivid images.

Vijay,
I think it is D (like in Dar - fear), Dh (DhAkA), d (dayA), or dh (dhan - wealth) when we romanize Indian script. In tamizh, D, and Dh, along with T (TUTnA - to break) and Th (jhUTh - lie) get collapsed to the T/D letter/sound, and d, and dh, along with t (sItA) and th (tithi - date) all get collapsed to the t/d letter/sound.
Arasi,
You are correct - nardanam in tamizh is nartanam/dance, while mardanam sounds and means the same...

Shiroop,
I agree with you. I also felt exactly like you.
I think this goes once again to prove that we are no longer interested in people like women artists like Sudha Raghunathan, Nithyasree, Aruna Sairam, Mahathi etc. I am sure people now will fight back saying Soumya , Ranjini & Gayathri are done regularly and some others like vedavalli and Suguna Puroshotam are reviewed. But the enthu in reviews of TMK, Sanjay, TNS is not there in others. I guess FANs of such people should come forward in to putting their views in web. But I am not sure whether this is women vs men performer bias. I guess everyone is busy and they can attend only their fav artist. I will be very keen reading Mandolin U Srinivas , Shashank and Ravikiran reviews and they are all great artists. Nowadays there is some interest here in Vijay Siva and TVS.

the preferences in a low traffic forum and that too pertaining to a form of music that has long lost its mass appeal is not statistically meaningful. sample size needs to be large for pattern to emerge. so dont take it seriously.rajaglan wrote:Shiroop,

audience profile of aruna, sudha, nityashri concerts versus the others varies drastically also. maybe only small percentage of non-tmk-sanjay audience pool is online! i am fan of all the three ladies but neither read nor write reviews. but who is this mahathi who is clubbed with such popular singers? have never seen the name in even one of my sabha schedules.
bias is everywhere. hindu newspaper coverage is very biased often hyping up completely mediocre singers! sruti magazine has also joined this bandwagon after pattabhiramans demise. other media dont seem to have agenda but covre carnatic music in token and/or random fashion.

Hi rbsiyer
thanks.
Mahati is added not to club with stalwarts, just to highlight that we do review of upcoming artists like Abhishek Raghuram , Prassanna Venkatraman etc (also selectively) . Mahati is covered in Kumudham, viktatan , hindu and Aval vikatan during music season. I havenot heard much except a song of her Mahalakshmi jaganmatha and also a thodi (mind boggling and short) alapana of her in some program. So that 'etc' has lot more
thanks.
