Govt of Karnataka has proposed to start a University on Music alone and one and all must welcome this idea and support. This thread is started to start healthy discussions at length on rational ideas and suggestions in establishing a University on Music. amsharma

Happy for the people of Karnataka. Though not a separate University, in Kerala Swati Thirunal College is very much in the propagation of music for a long time. http://www.keralauniversity.edu/swathi.htm

According to the item in ‘Hindu’ as it has been proposed to establish this Music University to produce artists and musicians only but not degree holder at all everything must be qualitative but not quantitative at all. As per my experience, everywhere I have found only quantitative syllabus in our Karnataka-music but not qualitative and that too devoid of any academic supervision at any level. The music-teachers working everywhere either in the music-institutions or music departments of various Universities or as freelancers are imparting music only for money sake and not for art’s sake. I have observed the teaching methods of umpteen music-teachers either freelancers or working in several music institutions or music departments of various Universities and found this very sad state of affairs. But nobody is there to bell the cat. If anybody has any doubt in this regard I am always ready to prove this at any time.
In general, as all the authorities, being non-musicians, always think that all these music-performing-vidwans who have been honoured with the titles like Padmashree or Padma Vibhooshan or Sangita Kalanidhi or Top-rank or Kakanakaabhishekam (not Sunakabhishekam, of course) or golden-jewelry can produce replicas of them just like bolts and nuts come out from a machine and appoint them as Principals or Professors or Heads of the Departments. They do not know that they can only perform the art efficiently but cannot make others replicas. Everywhere this has been happening and in my case also this has happened when I was first appointed as a Lecturer in Violin, paving way to destroy some of the aspirants as I could not spoil some other fortunate aspirants who, at last, became 3rd grade teachers or 3rd grade performers. amsharma

When I clicked at the 'Departments & Faculties' of the above link of the Kerala College to find out the relevant details I did not get anything at all surprisingly. amsharma
