for Conquering India
on February 02, 1835
"I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and ,therefore, I propose that we replace the old and ancient education system, her culture, because if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native self-culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation."
- Lord Macaulay
this is the thing that we (indians) have think about.

OK, let us not get worked up by this and relate it to present day and lament the deterioration of our culture.
At a purely technical level, a right wing friend of mine sent this to me more than a year ago, he only sends such things
I tried to verify the validity of this address since the British keep a record of official speeches made in their government houses. I have not been able to authenticate it yet. If someone can collect that kind of info that will be a useful historical record.
I do not think we need to be surprised if this is an actual address by this person, worse tactics and strategies have been adopted by conquering nations to subjugate the masses but I would like to know if it was an actual speech or not.

How many of us cannot have strong feelings about this?
But this is not the forum for it. I wish the moderators would close this thread
(I am no historian, but, just for the record, I seem to remember a BBC radio program in which this speech as discussed at length, and I believe it to be authentic. Again: this is not the forum for this debate)
