It was a concert with an interesting feature - Thavil accompaniment for vocal! And the sound settings were quite ok in that the vocal or the violin was not drowned out in the midst of the three pronged percussion team. Barring the Thani which was a bit on the louder side, the Thavil did not intrude into the sound levels greatly.

The concert began with popular pieces. The Hindolam Alapanai was nicely done with a touch of Graha Bedam to Mohanam. The Bhairavi Alapanai was emotive and leisurely done for about 12 minutes. The violinist’s reply was wonderful. Ganesh Prasad, to me, is up there with the best of the present-day violinists. His reply for just 6 minutes clearly showed how one could play a really nice Ragam in a crisp fashion. The Swarams for Bhairavi had some nice phrases. The Pallavi was announced to be appropriately devised for the venue - the venue being a college, the Pallavi being on Goddess Saraswathi and set to Saraswathi Ragam. And the Ragams for the Ragamalika Swarams were suitably chosen to befit the Goddess as well - Hamsadhwani, Vagadeeshwari and Hamsanadam. The Pallavi was sung well with Trikalam being executed neatly. The Swarams in the three Ragams were sung back to back in the final round and the transitions blended well. The Thani led by the Thavil veteran had some good patterns.

Overall, a fine concert with a novel Pallavi.

I thought the vivAdi nature of vIravasantam cud have been highlighted a little more despite the fact that it was only a filler... It's a beautiful rAga... The RTP was wonderful. The violinist's replies in hindOlam swarakalpana were really good...

In as review of this concert in Dailythanthi Sri Harikesanallur Venkatraman ( Understand is a grandson of HMB) has rated the concert very highly and has said that she is one among thetop ten artists and advvised the rasikas not to miss her concert this season. THere are abot 15/20 top artist today like 1. TNS 2. Sanjay 3 T M Krishna 4 Bombay Jayshree 5. TVS 6. OST. 7. Ranjani and Gayatri 8. Aruna Sairam 9. Sudha Raghunathan. 10. Bomaby sisters 11. Gayatri Venkatraghavan. 12. Vijay Siva. 13. Sowmya 14. Nityashree.15. NSG. (order of listing has no relevence to any rating)

I have heard Gayatri in chennai and Delhi. Her song selections are very good. I intend attending her concert during this season also.

But if we have a Tennis like ATP ranking I amnot sure where Gayatri will fit in.
